AMD Roadmap Shows 6-core and 12-core Opteron Processors

In a briefing today AMD disclosed a conservative road map for 45nm server processors using six and twelve cores that will gradually start to ship starting from Q1 2009. The new processors will be manufactured in a 45 nm process that will be introduced with the Shanghai quad-core later this year. Shanghai will deliver performance boost of about 20% over Barcelona thanks to the new process, the doubled overall cache size and the 800MHz DDR2 memory controller. In the second half of 2009, AMD intends to ship a single-die 6-core Socket F (1207) processor code-named "Istanbul". Offered for two- and four-socket systems, the chip will likely utilize AMD's HyperTransport 3.0 technology and increased shared L3 cache from 2MB to 6MB. In two years time from now AMD is promissing a completely new platform. Called the "Maranello" platform, it will bring new 6-core "Sao Paulo" CPUs with 6MB of L3 cache, as well as the dual-die 12-core "Magny Cours" processor with 12MB L3 cache. Both processors will be built in 45nm, with DDR3 memory support and HyperTransport version 3.0 interconnect. AMD will couple these CPUs with motherboards that use its own RD890S and RD870S northbridges as well as the SB700S southbridge.

"per core" isn't mentioned so it has to be a whole comparison. All it said was Shanghai being 20% faster than Barcelona (which anyway is way slower compared to Harpertown (its current generation competitor)). So unless AMD comes up with a CPU technology that performs 60% better than the current Barcelona/Agena/Toliman, it will never be able to give a high-end product and we'll continue to shell-out $1500 for a QX9770 or worse still, $1300 for a dual-core X5272.

you may be right on that, who knows i may even be able to afford one of these by the time that happens, but seeing how its only gunna be a 20% increase, i think i may have to go intel once again, but hey they still might pull something out of there ass, right? maybe? hopefully...for their sake...

I dont know - 20% per-clock, with higher clockrates and lower power draw... thats nothing to shake a stick at. It will still be a decent chip.

tbh Amd at the moment and its immediate forseable future doent seem very bright but i hope they come up with something coz competition is what is keeping the market favorable for us consumers. Trust me if AMD goes under intel wil monopolize the situation and charge rediculus prices, not to mention they will slow down with making better processors coz they would only have themselves to compete with.

Why are "common" people even worrying about this, it's NOT for you thus it seems stupid. These are for a market you have nothing to do with...anyone here actually using a server motherboard (besides those running servers...but then again really how big is yours?) or 2 processor boards?

I HIGHLY doubt that and system specs of course show that we're not. Why condemn a product that has nothing to do with you and is not aimed at you. Just because something makes the news it doesn't mean it's news for you...

I hate seeing things like this, same for the Intel crazy cores processors why are people even worrying about what they're doing unless you're actually in THAT very particular market. Crazy...just crazy

I think Shanghai will compare favorable to the current Xeon platform.
Most people here are comparing to much Phenom with C2Q. Server market is a completely different market.

You should check out these articles first to know what i mean:

In the first article you will see that most Xeon X73xx's are clocked at around 2.4Ghz. Only one is clocked higher. So there is no enormous clock advantage like Intel has on the desktop market.

In the second article you will see that a 20% performance increase is all AMD needs. In HPC it will even get a serious lead.

If AMD is lucky and Nehalem doesn't come too soon (or Shanghai too late), it can have good 1H-2009 in the server market.

just a thought - the news report only mentioned a 20% increase with Shanghai . . . it made no mention of what we could expect with Istanbul
