Every once in a while, a market research group or two will bother to determine just how the general populace of the internet will respond to certain types of media. This most recent market research shows that most people using the internet are more likely to possess the qualities of an ADHD riddled 5 year old, and only spend a few minutes on a web page before switching tasks. This does not help advertisers, who would rather users take a slow, mellow approach to the internet, and notice all the subtle nuances embedded in the website designed around making the user buy some trinket or another. Instead, they have to deal with a crowd that is suspicious of anything that tries to get the user to spend more than the absolute minimum required time looking at a web page. The conclusion to this study said that most web page authors really ought to keep fancy widgets to themselves, and merely facilitate what the user is really trying to do, whatever that may be.

I am impatient. I wanna pwn n00bs now! Selfish? Internet users are, IE: Leeroy give him the health pack, he only has 2 health, and you have 99. And Leeroy takes it. That is selfish.

I'd say that is a pretty spot on survey. An exception for me is websites like newegg.com, where I take some time to look around the page for specials and stuff.

kinda like channel surfing when the commercials come on TV....

"Web users were also getting very frustrated with all the extras, such as widgets and applications, being added to sites to make them more friendly." i thought we were always frustrated with this.... they should replace the word "friendly" with "annoying as all get-out."

the internets is too much song n dance - they should trim the fat off it a little - not everyone wants to see adds which asks if they want a bigger penis or if their looking for hot girls in their area......

well I got something for you! & shes called hairy palm :rockout::rockout:

people just want a straight forward approach to things - if people had to go through 20 adds /popups just to get to their desired webpage im sure theyd comit suicide rather then wade through endless advertising.

I sympathise as it is a medium which one can advertise their wears but c'mon lets cut down on the adds - you may even save a matrix or 2

Spam = Ads!
Ofcourse we dont bother noticing the Ads because most of us are either warned that most ads are clickable virus's ( Which most common then not they are ) & we are sick of the ads altogether.

Its not ADHD, its common sence! Several moments to several minutes is all one requires to get their work done, and the last thing a user wants is several moments to complete a task turn into hours of browsing or a virus that leads to a format proceedure.

The term ' selfish ' should be applied to the websites hosting the ads to begin with.
We are not immortal, so impatience is a human trait we all bare.
Telling someone to mellow out while browsing and take the time to notice ads bares a frame of mind ill rather not get mixed up with. The conclusion to the article says it all. Leave us alone and get to the point man!

The best way to put it is:

The internet has not matured yet, and neither has its users.

Same here...I do not like ads popping up when I'm looking at news etc...Now for places like the "Egg" or Performance PC's I do look at their ads...BUT I would get annoyed quick if I started seeing the "get a bigger d!ck" adds :shadedshu or the "hot girls in your area" adds  or the "become a millionaire and not leave your couch" adds :wtf: on their sites. Actually I pay no attention to those adds when I'm browsing...It IS becoing more of a problem in my e-mail...You would not believe the amount of sh^t I have to send to the spam side...I don't even know how these a-holes got my e-mail...I've never visited their stupid .com's, .orgs or .net's....yet they are continually filling my in-box with their ridiculous info...:twitch: Spammers do provide us with a outlet for one of mankinds basic needs..the need to hate things that annoy us...thanks spammers.

well that makes sense since the internet was essentially "built" by selfish/impatient computer geeks who wanted a fast and easy way to get porn. nothing has changed.

Ad Blocker FTW is right! I want to go to a site for the thing I went there for, not no song and dance to where it takes me 30 mins to get the info I wanted. The only site I stay on longer then 10 mins is TPU... Or if its Newegg and I'm spending my paycheck.... but Everything else just gets old because you get that ad that you now have to sit threw or you can't see the dang page you wanted! One reason I hate sites like IGN and such... But, rant is over. Wonder when there will be a survey that says that ads don't sell on the internet?

I have adblock plus, noscript, peerguardian, Zone Alarm and Tor installed

I hate the fact that websites are collecting so much information and targeting ads etc.

Gotta say though.. adblock is an amazing piece of software.. I hardly ever see an advert on the internet now

peer guardian is a joke, if you think its making you more secure your kidding yourself.

as to blocking adds, the best way is a good host file ;)

Noscript blocks over THREE HUNDRED scripts on the IGN front page.

Plus, peerguardian has IGN and "Savvis" blacklisted too

Wha's wrong with Peer Guardian? I use it for bit torrent.

Stops known anti-p2p agencies from downloading data from you in a bit torrent swarm. I read recently that if you block the main 2-3 anti-p2p sites, you drastically reduce your chances of ever being dragged into court. It may not hide your IP but if they can't download data from you, it means they don't have "evidence" (i.e. files downloaded from you) to prove that you were sharing.

Is there some massive flaw that I'm missing?

also, I realise a host file is better for ad-blocking, but it can be fiddly if you need to allow ads for any reason. Adblock is nice because you can simply right click and show/hide.

perhaps the survey is only reflecting the growing number of people who are more "internet-aware" . . .

Hell, it was only 5 years ago the internet was starting to boom, and more and more people were joinging on . . . as people become more aware of shortcuts, quick-keys, searching by using cached pages with highlighted keywords; it only stands to assume that users are able to navigate quicker than before. Coupled with the ease of access to high-speed internet, we no longer have to "hang-out" at a particular website waiting to d/l a file or stream a video or song. Where it used to take 15min of waiting to watch a 1.5min video, now only takes 1.75min.

Another useless, waste of funding survey, IMO.

the fact that it dosnt work?

check with people in any large torrent sites IRC chanil, if you ask about peerguardian most of the ppl will just laugh at you thinking its saving you from being caught.....

you block their KNOWN addys, but those companys know all about pg2, and guess what, they use proxys allover the world, as well as hiring people to run p2p apps and collect data for them from home......

basickly pg2 is like putting a rubber on thats got holes in it, you may think your protected but really its not doing much other then giving you a faulse sence of security.
