Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

Has anyone in the US looked into starting a class action lawsuit? I'm thinking similar to the recent one against WD/Sandisk.

    Lexar NM790 4 TB

Sorry but this is old conventional wisdom from the days of SATA SSDs. DRAM is much less important for modern Gen 4 NVMe drives. Most DRAMless NVMe drives w/ HMB have full 5 year warranties, compared with just 3 years for DRAMless SATA. DRAM in SSDs is used to hold the FTL mapping table that...

    Lexar NM790 4 TB

WD has done internal testing on this tl;dr even 16MB is enough for the vast majority of use cases.

Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

Thanks @ThomasRhin. The controller and DRAM are indeed the same, but the NAND part number is slightly different. The older 870 EVO 4TB NAND part number is K9DVGB8J1B-DCK0 according to TPU database. Your new version lists K9DVGB8J1E-DCK0, one letter different. It is apparently still V6 (128L)...

Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

Rumours of MX500 switching to QLC turned out to be false, it's still TLC across the board. But they have started cheaping out on the DRAM, so if you get a new 1/2/4TB model it will only have 512MB DRAM instead of the expected 1GB per TB.

Here's how to make CDI show SMART values in decimal (should be default imo): Go to 'Function' -> 'Advanced Feature' -> 'Raw Values' -> select '10 [DEC]'

Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

Seems like Samsung is still making and shipping new 870s with the old 128L NAND revision. My brand new 4TB 870 EVO arrived from Amazon. 05/2023 DOM, made in Korea. Should come with the brand new firmware right? Nope, SVT02B6Q. Serial number was S6xxx. Serial number begins with S7 = new SVT03...

Nvm didn't notice that you asked for software. There's no software tool for identifying NAND on Samsung. You would have to open the drive which will void the warranty.

You can type the NAND part number into this database (change language to English in top right corner).

    Solidigm P44 Pro 2 TB & 1 TB

Nice review and a great drive. Hopefully Samsung sends you a 990 Pro, I'm interested to see how they compare.

Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

Should be fine, I've still seen no reports of drives that shipped with the new firmware going bad.

Samsung 870 EVO - Beware, certain batches prone to failure!

I've heard that 4TB MX500s may be shipping with QLC now, though not confirmed. Plus the 4TB model only has 512MB DRAM instead of the expected 4GB (Micron says it's for cost savings) To be honest SATA SSDs as a whole are in a terrible place right now. EVO and Crucial MX have historically been...

I imagine it probably had something to do with the silicon shortage and COVID supply chain disruptions.

That drives in that post were manufactured in January 2021, they shipped with the old firmware. Drives with the new firmware started shipping around early 22 IIRC. FYI if you want to know the manufacture date of your Samsung drive and can't be bothered removing it from the system -- you can...
