If it helps ppl in the long run Im all for it.

and the above poster is right, the 8800GT was way ahead of its time, but only because the 8800GTX and Utra were about 2 years ahead of their time vs ATIs cards.
The 8800GT's still are great cards for 90% of ppl now days, and the new name sceam will push old cards price down even more.

what way ahead of its time? it was barely 10% faster than the ATI counterpart.

Admittedly the whole renaming scheme of Nvidia and it's influx of gtx+ products is getting a bit old, BUT, I think Nvidia is not only not a joke but are right in the game, ATI was a joke for a while in the true sense of the word, they FINALLY get a couple good cards, and all of a sudden you see everyone jumping on board...and these still are far from perfect cards. The amount of juice it takes for even a single 4870 to sit there and idle and do absolutely nothing (nevermind the amount the x2 takes) is absolutely shameful, even the reviews all of which say mostly positive things about the 4x series point out how bad they are at that, particularly compared to the gtx260/280 which are extremely efficient at idle...who cares? Well, I guess if you have an unlimited budget and just like paying craploads for electic bills for nothing, or NEVER leave your computer on and NEVER use it for anything other than gaming I guess you're ok...And if Nvidia ever gets its ass in gear and hurries up and releases 55nm or less versions of the gtx series and shorly thereafter whatever new architecture their working on, they could be number 1 in less time than one might think...

All this aside, thank GOD literally that ATI is finally producing good cards again, this caused the gtx+ to show up along with all the nvidia price cuts, so I think it's great! Truthfully I wouldn't buy any of the new products as is, I'm waiting to see the next wave from both red and green to see how to upgrade from my 8800gts sli setup, considering I don't think it'll be more than a month or two before major releases will happen...not just this silly renaming crap.

so suddenly you become a green power power?
Check your system spec before you run your mouth about the idle power, 4870 idles almost the same as the 8800/9800/+ crappies. And a 4870X2 idles at less power than 9800 sli(similar to your sli toys).

As for the "gtx260/280 efficiency" thing, nvidia can not get its "power play" to work properly, the nv cards run at full clock when opening IE and playing video. It still doesn't get fixed in the newest official driver, so it is practically running as much, if not more than the ATI counterparts.

Ouch.
They've been issuing so many cards in so little time and using such confusing names...

I'd have a suggestion for Nvidia - they keep the GT, GTS, GTX nomenclature but change their card names to for example "October 08", "November 08" etc...

That way for example a card issued in December would be the December 08 GT, December 08 GTS....

Firstly, might I suggest, whether you agree with his comments or not, you are much better to prove your point with facts rather than insults, as to your points, some are good......some are not so good, it is actually the HD4870 that has issues with it's "powerplay" and has the highest idle temp of any of the single GPU's shown in this attachment......................

nvidia is a joke, so this is how nvidia plans to beat ATi in making people think these are new cards and don't expect the Newbies to suspect anything.

Well, if it aint broke...

People complain about the 'rehasing' and the 'renaming..'

Who cares? If the product is new, someone will test it, if it's good, they'll tell you. All you gotta do, is put down your crack pipe, and remember it's name; and then stop buying crack, so you can afford to go buy it, that is, if you remember it's name.

Car manufacturers release a 'new' car model pretty much every year, and I don't mean NEW, I mean rehashed, renamed, rebranded. There are improvements, but not always in the ways YOU might want them. Some years they get better mechanical parts, some years better electronics etc.

G92 was G80 with improvements... any 'performance' loss, was negligible enough in real world conditions, that it justified the improvements made elsewhere, as well as performance, when applicable.

There's no reason for G92 to end, there's no reason for numbers to change.

With all the geeking and nerding we do around here, you'd think people would be on top of things and know whatever it is they need to know, to make an informed decision.

And don't take the moral high ground, as if you're defending the average consumer. If they can't be bothered to research then F U * K them. We have enough ignorance in the world today, no matter how saturated our society is with the digital age of computers; there's really no excuse.

More often than not, this is just a Nvidia bashing bandwagon.
