Industry watcher DigiTimes has some good news today. Apparently, disturbed by the rising presence of ATI in the discrete graphics card market, NVIDIA is planning a counter attack with the easiest way possible - cut the prices of its products. If the information is right, NVIDIA is going to slash the prices across its entire high-end GeForce GTX 200 line-up, as well as the mainstream GeForce 9800 GT and GeForce 9600 GT series. Unfortunately, the other piece of information as of when and by how much the prices will go down is unknown.
With AMD making gains in the discrete graphics card market - rising to around 40% in third-quarter 2008 according to a recent report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) - Nvidia is planning to cut its graphics card prices in an attempt to curb further loss of market share, according to sources at graphics card makers.
AMD anticipates taking 50% of the market after reducing prices for its ATI Radeon HD 4000 series products, but to counter Nvidia has also made moves to cut prices for its GeForce GTX 200, 9800 GT and 9600 GT series.

Cool, I was looking at getting a GTX260 too. :) Drop that GTX 280 to current GTX260 216 pricing and I will without a doubt get one. :)

This is cool, however I am thinking about waiting for the HD 5000 series to come out.

Hopefully, we will see the 55nm parts start to hit the market soon. Higher clocks at the same price points would work nicely too.

Now if only AMD started to gain market share in the CPU dept, we could be getting somewhere.

NVIDIA is going to slash the prices

Verb: slash
  1. Cut with forceful sweeping strokes; as with a saber or machete
  2. Beat severely
  3. Cut drastically

OK, so let's hold them to their marketing blurb. 30% or it ain't slashing!

If they drop the price of the 4830 to $89 I'm going to put my fist through my monitor for buying a new card just two weeks ago.

About time they will slash their prices again, there pretty expensive. I was thinking of going ATI since they cost less.

I enjoy the fact Nvidia has to "slash" prices to remain competitive with AMDs release prices.

It goes both ways. I am just glad that the competition keeps things in check.

I just got a Crossfire mobo and was planning on a pair of 4830s to go with it...Nvidia is gonna have to cut pretty deep to beat that.

Hey, they're incredibly cheap, even more so if the price is dropped -- and two of them can beat a GTX 280 at most resolutions, I'm pretty sure. :D

I have been running SLI for quite a while (7600GS,GT, 8600GT,8800GT,9600GT,9800GT,GTX) But the 4830s seem to me a sweet spot (like the 9600GTs were) Price wise they are under $100 (I paid $159 for my 8600GTs, lol) but they are 256bit, 512 mem (just seem special to me for some reason)

I just wish the mobo I ended up with had 3 or 4 PCI Ex slots..

oh, I'm sure as well . . . just curious. I would assume spend the little extra on the 4850s, but then again, if gaming isn't a primary necessity, than a 4830 is more than enough.

Isn't a "primary necessity?" That's a very subjective statement -- gaming is a primary necessity for my computer, and all I've got is a 4670. :D

Two 4830's in Crossfire would be incredible performance compared to just about any single GPU out there. Remember the reviews? When overclocked, the 4830 was equal to a 4850 -- it suffers very little from those missing stream processors. ;)
