Available immediately, it features a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor which is two to three times faster than the previous iMac, a built-in iSight video camera, and iLife '06, providing students and teachers everything they need to learn and create in today's digital classroom, all in the ultra-efficient iMac design. If you need even powerfull iMac you can pay $1,199 for the 17-inch version with 160GB Serial ATA HDD and ATI Radeon X1600. Apple could make a ton of money if they sold OS-X for PC

It's theoretically possible, the new macs ARE x86. Someone with a spare computer and $120 to spare should test this for us . Just get Mac OSX for an intel mac, stick it on your spare PC, see what happens.

How does Jobs expect for schools or students with low budgets to pay over $950 (when you consider taxes) for having an underpowered x86 based PC when right now all other system builders like HP, Dell or Gateway offer PCs with even higher specs and lower prices? :nutkick: :shadedshu

Because HP loads their PC's up with crap, Dell sucks, Gateway is too expensive, and Mac OS X is linux. And a very efficient form of linux at that...A 400Mhz G3 with 320MB RAM at least MATCHED, if not beat, the performace of Darth Flatulence in video editing. So imagine what happens when you put modern tech into a mac, add a second core, and put Mac OS X on...it flies :D.

Dell does not suck, IMO they are a lot better then Apple, especially when it comes to pratically giving away their products to schools.

I don't see how anyone can consider Apple a good computer company. They lie to their customers, cheat them out of warranty claims, deny all claims that their products are defective even when they clearly are, and offer no help to the customer when they have problems due to the defects. Yeah, that is one hell of a good company...:banghead:

On the other hand Dell is cheap, has better support, better warranties, and when comparing the same hardware XP actually runs a lot of business apps(like the ones students would be using) faster then OSX. There are things like Photoshop CS2 running 50-60% faster on XP then OS X when run on the exact same computer. To be fair, OS X is no slouch, I don't want it to sound that way. It does do some things just as fast or faster then XP. In the end though XP comes out slightly ahead overall in terms of speed when run on the exact same hardware both from reading people experiences on the internet and my own short time with a Macbook Pro.

Something tells me you did not have the best experiences with your mac...I used the school's for my Digital Video and Film class. Not a single problem, ran fine, was easy to use, it just worked. It wasn't even that slow, especially considering that these were ANCIENT Imacs. But the school Dells require regular maintenance, the n00bs that use these for classes get viruses on the Dells, few other people then the teacher know how to use the Dells, except for how to make the screen turn sideways. So basically, from MY experiences, Macintosh is good in a school environment. For business and gaming environments, though, I'd have to say Windows is better.

Agreed! I used Macs for years, I think my first one was a little Mac Plus, then 5 or more after that. Switched over mid - late 90's due to lack of support for games, free source (internet) programs, patches/downloads, and just being able to be on the same freakin' platform as 90% of the other people for once.

I don't miss Macs at all... not one bit :D

I've had one too many projects depending on an iMac to say Mac sucks . For tweakers like us though, a PC is simply...better.

At no point did I say iMacs are slow or inefficient, but you can get almost the same hardware from any other system builder or schools could build their own PCs using off the shelf parts, at a much lower price.

I'm complaining about price, not performance, somehow, I don't see schools all over the country jumping to get a $950+ computer for the price of 1.5 or even 2 PCs with similar hardware configuration :slap:

The only thing apple has going for them is OSX, but unfortunately, most students are better off using WinXP based PCs, that's what the vast majority of them will be using once they get out of school anyway

I had no problems at all with the hardware when I had it. My problem is with the POS company called Apple and their complete crap business practices. The computers themselves are great though, even if they are overpriced. Though I can't really say they would be good in a school environment or at least not any better then PCs for the reasons you mentioned. The PCs getting viruses didn't seem to be a problem with the 500 or so PCs I supported in my Universities labs, though I guess it is probably because we actually took a little time and made sure the stupid students have almost no user rights at all, they couldn't even install anything, very locked down. An hour spent locking down one computer then imaging it over to all the other computers was well worth the tens of thousands we saved by getting the cheaper PCs instead of Macs.

As for Dell not being better then Apple, I don't think so. Dell doesn't publicly deny that a defective part affecting thousands of its customers is actually defective and then turn down every single warranty claim made by said users. Only to later turn around and say that it was a defect and they knew it was when they were turning down warranty claims. I worked at an all Dell University, I know their computers inside and out. They do have their problems, like the faulty power supply problem that took down 100+ computers in a single month, but we never had a problem, and I have never seen a time when Dell did not take responsibility and replace the defective parts...and complete care is God's gift to warranties. Oh and Dell also doesn't go to a sweatshop, see that it is a sweatshop, then pat the people running the sweatshop on the back and say "keep up the good work making our ipods."

Also Alienware, while owned by Dell, is not dell. They are still 100% separate companies, Alienware is still run by Alienware execs, not Dell's and to fault Dell because Alienware wouldn't replace your friend's video card is wrong. Besides that I have seen alienware replace parts in a machine simply because the user reported them as acting funny, so I don't know why your friend couldn't get is video card replaced.

See, my schools IT department just takes the computers, puts in easily bypassed parental controls (run-cmd-ping the website, enter websites IP into web browser.), sets up network, gives everyone a limited user account (and the passwords for admin accounts are given in class.), and puts in really bad antivirus software. Hence, our school once was quite proud of the 5+GB of music, games, and junk on its server . And I did not know about the sweatshop thing...scary. I suppose that it depends on how you plan on using the hardware. When you are at "Dell University", where everyone is serious about what they do, Dell does just fine. When you go to my school, where people are smuggling games on every chance they get, either a security boost, less privelages, or macs are called for in my opinion.
