Radeon HD 4770 Sets Sights on GeForce GTS 240

ATI, as part of its initial plans with the 40 nm manufacturing technology is preparing the RV740 graphics processor, the company's next mid-range workhorse graphics processor. The new manufacturing process lets AMD respect the price-constraints of that market segment, and accordingly price its SKUs. VR-Zone sourced a few more details about the GPU.

While it is already known that the RV740 goes into making the Radeon HD 4700 series, it is now rumored that its two variants will be termed HD 4770 and HD 4750, and not HD 4750 and HD 4730, as reported earlier. The HD 4770 SKU will be distinct in being the first mainstream graphics card with GDDR5 memory. It will use its 128-bit wide bus to accommodate 512 MB of memory. The HD 4750 on the other hand, will stick to GDDR3. The reference model may have 1GB of it. HD 4770 is expected to be priced around the US $120 mark, making it a head-on competitor to the GeForce GTS 240, which is known to be a re-badged GeForce 8800/9800GT with higher reference clock-speeds. The HD 4750 has GeForce 9600 GT in its sights, with its expected initial pricing ranging around the $100 mark. The two are expected to follow the RV790 launch, and will arrive in May, close to two months after the GeForce GTS 240 comes to be.

This will mean that 4830 will get discontinued? That's already compeating with 9800GT. 4730 would replace 4670 then and 4770 will go below 4850.

It may go on till RV770 inventories support it. Right now I would imagine AMD binning RV770s, sending outstanding-quality ones to RV790, and the rest to RV770LE.

I was about to say -- the 4830 is already an amazing competitor to the 8800GT/9800GT/GTS 240/[insert other branding here], on both the price and performance fronts.

I was half tempted to sell my 4670 and pick one up.

Those prices are not very realistic for a May release if they really want to compete against 9600GT and 9800GT. Prices of both them are already lower and I can't see them but going even lower with the time. In fact, they have gone up in the last 2-3 months, so I think they will go down to their natural price sooner than later. I also don't see the new cards being much faster or they would compete with the HD4850. Could it be that possible?

4830 kiLLs a 8800/9800 & with native HDMI its PERFECT card.....Makes me wish I used im my build instead of friends.

Fine rebrand it and give it ddr5....then I WILL BUY FOR MESELF!!!

so what is this model based on, the 4670 or the 4830? I know its GDDR5 n all but the 4850 and 4870 are the same Internally other than what ram they use. The 4670 would probably be extremely strong to run a 1280x1024 resolution monitor since its supposed to be 3 Gens ahead of my 1950 Pro. The 2400/2600 got whooped by the 1950 in Gaming performance.

It's a new core, and I think it's final specs are not public yet. Rumors say it will have 640 SPs, so it shares that with the 4830, but at the same time it will have 128 bit interface and GDDR5. That would mean that unless there's a big architecture change it will sport the same 8 ROPs as the 4670 has. Common sense says that is inviable, 4670's 320 SPs are already held back by it's low ROP count. Probably Ati is increasing the ROP to MC width for this card, so instead of 4 ROPs per 64 bit, it will have 8, or IMHO, more probable is that they will increase the pixels per clock of the ROPs once again, something that is not as beneficial, but maybe a good mid ground approach.
