NVIDIA Might Cut the Price of GeForce GTX 260 to $199

Our friends from Guru of 3D alarm that NVIDIA might cut the price of GeForce GTX 260 by up to $30 from its current price tag. With the new price in position the GeForce GTX 260 should drop to around $199 and thus enter in the same league as ATI's Radeon HD 4870 with 1 GB memory. The price cut is direct result of ATI's recent price reductions that soften the price of both Radeon HD 4870 512 MB and Radeon HD 4850 512 MB.

That is the 192 sp and 65 nm card? The Egg has the same card for relatively cheap as well.

I know there's not a significant difference, just pointing it out.

Didn't know that the GTX 260 price drop to $200 was referring to the 216sp 55nm cards (initial news source didn't say anything about it).

Nvidia's Geforce GTX 260 is going to be $30 cheaper at retail pretty soon, down to $199. Last week, AMD spoiled the launch of the Geforce GTS 250 with a round of price cuts on its Radeon 4800 series products. The price cuts from AMD pitted the 4870 512MB against the GTS 250 1GB sku, a match up easily in AMD's favor while also dropping the price of the 4870 1GB sku to $199. Now Nvidia seems to be reacting and positioning the GTX 260 directly against the 4870 1GB.

Due to the flexible memory configuration of the 4870, AMD is able to address two different price points with different VRAM size skus. On the flip side, the board design of the GTX 260 has led to its culmination of only one; 896MB VRAM sku. This in turn means that Nvidia has no viable competitor at the $150 price point. Does it pay off in terms of market share or the bottom-line took too much of a hit, it is only a matter of time that we will see what really were the after effects of these price wars. As a consumer, you dont have much to complain about.

Core 216. The 192SP sku is set at $179, until they clear them out.

they could put the 4870 in its grave if they released a 240 sp card clocked 5-10% higher.

lets say a GTX260 core 240 (GTX275), running 633/1404/2200 would keep them clear up top and i doubt much they would have to worry about chips reaching these speeds. that still leaves plenty of oc headroom.

the extra shader cluster has shown those 5-10% gains themselves (192-216), and ~10% clocking will assure that stays well on top of a 4890, as it tends to beat a 4870 now. however the lack of ROPS, memory and a small sacrifice of speed keeps in nicely in check behind a GTX285 (which a 4870 would need a complete overhaul or LN2 to beat one)

Honestly since the 8 series came out, prices have been simply nonsense..
That's more reasonable.
Likely only doing it due to sales losses with the economy being crap.
as soon as things stabilize, they'll start raping us again..
