Specs:
phenom ii 940, MSI k9as platinum, 4gigs DDR2 1066, ati 4850 1gig GGR3, MSI theator pro, 802.11g MIMO wi-fi, 1.5 TB WD black edition drives w\32 meg cache
Mods:
got rid of that annoying whine by removing the 92mm zalmon fan on the zalmon 9700, fitted it with fan guards and two aerocool 120mm turbine fans. Removed stock video cooler and replaced with HR-03GT cooler, added aerocool centaurus, replaced power supply fan with hiper 120mm, and replaced front case fan with aerocool 120mm, reverse mounted powersupply.
This has been a work in progress with some to do, and perhaps it doesn't look like much compared to some of the awesome mods on here, but the CPU is consistantly 2 degrees cooler than the motherboard, it rarely breaks 41C even under extended loads, the 4850 runs between 52-62C even at load, and the entire system under full load is NEVER louder than 20Db... in other words the air pump to my aquarium is louder than this rig under full load. I went through a lot of fans, heatsinks, and setups to get here, but its probably the quietest air cooled setup running with this kind of equipment I've ever seen, I'm sure there's others out there but not many. The installation of the thermalright HR-03gt heatsink in this configuration also allows me to use all of the PCI and PCIe slots that would normally be blocked by the cooler, provided the cards are the half height HTPC style of course. This let me install both Wi-Fi and an MSI theator pro card easily.
*added internal view-need to clean this guy I see now, the camera caught dust in the fans (oh the horror!)
