Intel Makes New Processor Rating System and Logos Official

Intel made a new rating system for its client processors (desktop and notebook) official. The company also made new company logos for the various brands of processors official, which first surfaced in February. The new system involves segregating processors based on the performance indices they offer, measured by "stars", five stars being the top-tier of processors offering the ultimate technologies and performance, down to one stars with value and reliability. The grading system is best described by the company:

Each processor is assigned between one and five stars depending on a combination of features, including cores, GHz, cache, and other technologies. More stars indicate greater features and increased capabilities compared to other Intel processors.

Why is it always "Whatever INSIDE", what if you have it OUTSIDE? Hey, Intel shouldn't assume you always have it... "INSIDE"... ya' know...

Also, it would have looked better without the mixture of blocky colors (I assume that represents the motherboard architecture or something). And wait, what's this Pentium logo for? lol

I do, however, think that the star system is lame.
I think they should have one star per Hz.

Man, you'd think these guys would be smart enough to differentiate on the LOGO, and not make someone go to a web site to see how they're "rated".

Still have to squint to see the difference between the Core-2 and Core-i7. I don't mind the look of the logo's but that's inexcusable. :shadedshu

This is stupid.

People are going to associate this 'star' rating system with the same 5-star system they use for restaurants, hotels, and everything else that's given a 'star' rating.

The impression will inevitably be: Anything less than 3-stars is crap and a waste of money.

When those processors are just fine for people on a budget, or who are just looking for a basic, no-nonsense PC. This will just encourage people to spend more on processing power they'll never use.

Im guessing they are going by price, as my e8500 at stock would whoop any of the laptop processors at everything.

I don't like the logos I do think the star system is neat, but it could have been implemented a lot better.
In fact, I don't understand it. From the perspective of the consumer, they don't know what the hell a Q9000 or E8000 is, they just understand the Core 2 name.

Is it my eyes or it is hard to see the 'i7' or '2'?

Extreme 'i7' and '2': Black on dark grey?
Centrino '2': Light grey on white?

Where will you see the stars? Not on the new logo? On the box? Above the sky?
I guess those start are not permanent for a processor. I a new and faster one enter the market, the other will loose one?

Evolution: Even it is good, it must change and even it will become worst than before...

I am must not be very powerfull, I have only one star below my name!!!

if the star rating is going to be on retail boxes, i find it misleading. an e8X00 doesn't outperform a q6600 in every benchmark out there, especially when you overclock the q6600 to 3.6ghz and the e8400 to say 4ghz, the q6600 wins out. star rating is indeed misleading

The star system is a) visual, and b) affords a basic association with performance. The average person doesn't know about HT, Ghz, etc., which is the point. Sure, it might mean that people are more inclined to buy processors with more stars, but then that only means higher margins for Intel . It will give people some idea of what they are getting, but they are still likely to be left at the mercy of the opinion of whoever is selling them the computer.

I don't really like the rating system. It looks like when they release their new procs, everything will be moved down a star.

Pentium logo is for E5x00 or E2x00 CPUs.

And screw you intel, giving my E5200 2 stars!!
This thing OC's like mad, and I havn't even been trying yet! At 4.1 GHz its almost as good as a ~3.8 - 3.9 GHz E8x00 series!

One glaring issue I have with this, is that labelling the one star processors as "reliable" implies to the average user that the other high end offerings are not reliable...

I know they have to come up with something to make the budget offerings look like a reasonable option, but I would have picked something a little different.

And what happened to the E6000 series?
