they've done open betas for years, i know i had ME and 2000. betas/RC's.

The only difference now is that its for download, as opposed to being given out at conferences and public displays.

thus making it more accessible and in turn, generating more error reports and feedback to make improvements I might add

guess I was really lucky with my dial up. 52,000 bps connection speeds and no auto-disco's. That was on Compuserve.

Hahaha!! True enough, but even when they had the chance with 2000 then XP and Vista they didn't....so helluva good move on their part...they'll definitely corner the market now.

Remember the huge Windows 95 hoopla which was also an X-mas release? Everybody was going nuts about it!! I look back now and say.."What was the big deal?"

When i was on dial up i got nobbled to half speed thanks to Telstra changing the phone lines.

I know a VIP beta tester for 7, and he said the MS has not really listened to any of their advice compared to Vista (which may have resulted in the too much at once) - basically they are left in the dark and MS is doing it's own thing - maybe it's paid off because the VIP testers loved Vista and look how it turned out - the media crucified it. I hope MS repeats the same formula with Windows 8 because it's a clear winner.

Actually, Vista came with 2 DVDs - one x86 and one x64

EDIT: though it's 2 DVDs, it's one key for both versions.

Upgrade can sometime mean throwing half of your software away and maybe, the hardware need to be upgrade too. NTY, Vista is mighty fine for what I need.

I've had no problems with any boxed software, like Office, Sony ACID or PS CS4 - the only apps that will not run that I use are Chrome and AIM - both will surely be updated and ready to go by RTM. If your PC has a 1 GHz CPU and 1 GB or RAM, 7 will run - from what I can tell on here, everyone seems to have 2 GB or more, and the latest dual and quad core CPUs, so TPU users are 7 ready =P

That's right...x64 baby!! Trying not to install too much while using RC1 Right now...anxiously awaiting full retail x64 Ultimate!!!
