Today's students and young professionals need a versatile notebook that can serve as their workhorse by day and entertainment center at night. The new Dell Studio 14z powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor provides a perfect blend of performance and portability with graphics support for gaming, HD video, and creative self-expression.

The GeForce 9400M in the Dell Studio 14z delivers up to five times faster graphics performance than Centrino 2 notebooks to accelerate image editing, video playback, and video conversion. With vReveal, the Studio 14z can fix grainy, shaky video twice as fast as comparable notebooks, and then let you upload the video to YouTube in minutes.

The Studio 14z is also ideal for quickly converting video from desktop resolution to a personal media player. By running Badaboom Media Converter software on the GeForce 9400M, users can convert video up to 6 times faster than using a comparable notebook with standard integrated graphics.

Starting at only $649, the Studio 14z is the most affordable GeForce 9400M GPU-based notebook in North America. Yet it is powerful enough to deliver a superb high definition Blu-ray movie experience with an optional Blu-ray drive on the notebook's screen, or onto a larger screen via HDMI.

"Our groundbreaking GeForce 9400M graphics processor gives the Dell Studio 14z superior performance at a solid value," said Rene Haas, general manager for notebook GPUs at NVIDIA. "It delivers a great experience whether you're working or playing, catching up with your friends on Facebook, enjoying high definition video, or playing games like World of WarCraft."

This is the second Dell notebook to feature the GeForce 9400M graphics processor, following the January introduction of the Dell Studio XPS 13. The Dell Studio One 19 desktop PC also features GeForce 9400M.

The GeForce 9400M GPU boasts 16 CUDA parallel processing cores to deliver:
  • Superb playback of full-spec 1080p high definition video
  • Stunning HD video through an external monitor via HDMI
  • Acceleration for Adobe Photoshop CS4 for faster, easier photo editing
  • Accelerated video enhancement and transcoding using NVIDIA CUDA technology
  • DirectX 10 graphics
  • Support for popular PC games such as Call of Duty: World at War, The Sims 3, and World of WarCraft.

Not bad...But the MSI GT729 appears like it will run a little better, i.e. 4850 over 9400. But I am an ATI fanboy. :D

More like light gaming. A 9400M/M GT is the equivalent of a 8500GT/9400GT on the desktop.

Yea the Gateway P7811FX will run circles around that system, as it contains the 9800M GTS at 512.

not bad for a more portable gaming laptop. if it has better battery life than the studio xps 13 (which barely holds over an hour), then i might consider it since i dont really play all the new games on laptops. the price is really good to turn down.

But this Dell is a fraction of the size and cost. You're comparing apples to oranges really, the two aren't even in the same market segment. The 9400M isn't much of a GPU, but compared to the typical Intel IGP included on most netbooks, it is.

Also...
Hi, how's it goin'? :D

Sounds like its the same chipset in the Macbook, which has good battery life. This would be nice for light gaming on a budget, considering how badly Intel IGPs suck...

Indeed; Asus has a 14" with an HD4650 in it (1GB GDDR3 to boot) and it totally rocks performance/price-wise even though Asus underclocked both RAM and GPU (GPU @ 550mhz, ram at 667mhz).

Besides, there's good gaming 15,4" out there for 700€ with a fully clocked HD4670 which gets around 7000 3DMark06's in standard notebookreviews and thus equals awesomeness (let's not forget overclocking potential and modded drivers).

The 9400M is more like meh; it's basically what you would get with an Nvidia Ion Board for the Atom, only it is a dedicated chip with dedicated VRam; so playing modern games on it is a chore. This might be a good Multimedia-laptop but you have to exclude "Games" from the definition of "Media". :p

Yup.

Not the fastest thing in the world, but getting away from IGP in the low end of the market is -NEVER- a bad thing.

Douche? In all seriousness you might even be able to install OS X on that without any real modification to the CD, just a few extra drivers for sound, lan, wifi etc..
