OCZ Technology Group, a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory and computer components, today released the OCZ Agility SATA II 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD) Series, an affordable offering for mainstream notebook and desktop users demanding the latest technology in this fast-developing sector of the storage market. OCZ continues to place solid state technology within reach of the average consumer, and delivers on the promise of SSDs as an alternative to traditional hard drives in consumer targeted mobile and desktop applications. The Agility Series will join the lineup as the latest solution for mainstream users including professionals, students, gamers, and enthusiasts on a budget.

"The new Agility Series of SSDs are the latest addition to the OCZ lineup of solid state drives and are designed for cost-conscious consumers seeking the performance and reliability benefits of SSDs at an aggressive price," commented Ryan Edwards, Director of Product Management at the OCZ Technology Group. "The new Agility Series drives make use of cache to deliver better performance over a wide range of functions and applications, all at a price point that makes sense for everyday users."

Featuring the latest controller design, exceptional speed, and onboard cache, the OCZ Agility Series delivers the performance and reliability of SSDs at less cost per gigabyte than other high speed offerings currently on the market. The Agility Series is the result of all the latest breakthroughs in SSD technology, including an efficient controller design, speedy 230 MB/sec read and 135 MB/sec write speeds, along with 64 MB of cache.

Perfect for both notebooks and desktops with its compact form factor, the Agility Series is ideal for energy-efficient mobile computing to extend battery life, decrease data access time, and provide a durable alternative to conventional hard disc drives with superior shock resistance. High capacities and low power consuming NAND flash technology provide the necessary performance and battery life boosts generated by the proliferation of mobile gaming and new ultra-portable laptops and netbooks. With fast access and seek times combined with excellent reliability, the OCZ Agility Series SSDs are the answer for consumers demanding this latest storage technology in capacities ranging from 30 GB to 120 GB.

The OCZ Agility drives feature a durable yet lightweight alloy housing, and because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, the drives are more rugged than traditional hard drives. Designed for ultimate reliability, Agility Series SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. All OCZ SSD drives come backed a two year warranty and OCZ's legendary service and support.

Ok, so they brag about them being "at a pricepoint that makes sense for everyday users", and how they are targeted at those on a budget, yet they fail to mention the prices in the press release?

Seems to me if your major selling point is price, that perhaps YOU SHOULD MENTION IT IN THE PRESS RELEASE!!!!

Yet ANOTHER SSD product line from OCZ. How many have they got now? I cant remember they have so many. Talk about brand/product confusion. They really need to simplfy it into a maximum of 3 lines, SLC for enterprise/enthusiast, MLC enthusiast, and MLC economy.

How dare them call a $400 SSD "Affordable" :banghead:

They should have said : "We made it for the High-End market" not for the average consumer.

They probably think that all people sit on mountains of gold or something, could someone please explain this to me, because this is a direct lie :shadedshu

Price : $396

What i cannot understand with SDD's is the fact they say they last longer than typical HDD's but carry a much lower warranty.

When thats the same then i will consider buying them. For now i'll stick with HDDs with a 5 year warranty.

its because HDDs are backed by years of knowledge and experience. hdd companies know exactly what to expect from the quality products they make.

ssds are still too new to know exactly how long they will last. most MTBF ratings on ssds are only estimates based on test groups of drives. there are almost no statistics returned from ssds yet so no one has any info to go on as far as longevity is concerned.

yes your right but it was not to long ago people saying these drives would last longer although really they were talking out of there ass as no one really knows just yet.

I guess we will in about 2-3 years time :). Well have a much better idea anyways.

well, in perspective,

there are no moving parts which means no wear. based on that fact alone ssds have hdds beat as far as MTBF.

the problem with ssds is nand flash memory is subject to a certain amount of times it can be erased. how fast you get to that point depends on how much you use the drive.

ssds in a web/file server would almost certainly be dead far faster than ssds in my bench rig which is used only a few hours a week.

+10!!

IMO they need to come out with a crippled SSD controller. Either artificially limit the current controllers or put it on a Sata 150 bus or something. 150MB/s reads and 100MB/s writes. Some hard drives might be able to come close in performance, but the access time on a 'slow' SSD will still be insanely faster than any hard drive. 'Slow' SSDs will still be better than hard drives and would be more affordable....

SSD price is all from the NAND flash (and the suppliers aren't making much profit on it), not the controller. Controllers cost $6-$12, don't know how much the Intel and Samsung controllers are since they won't let us buy them :p
