AMD today announced that according to the latest industry data, notebook manufacturers have chosen ATI Mobility Radeon Premium graphics processors to drive more than half of today's discrete graphics notebooks. The data for mobile discrete graphics reveals a 36.5% market share gain, and 87.27% more units sold quarter-over-quarter through the first six months of 2009. AMD now holds the "Number 1" position with an overall 53% mobile discrete market share. The incredible momentum behind ATI Mobility Radeon Premium graphics processors is a result of:
  • Advanced performance, leading features, and innovative technology delivered by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series of graphics processors, such as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 and ATI Mobility Radeon 4670, including support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 10.1 enabling a home theater-quality HD multimedia experience, and an energy-efficient design for long battery life at work, at home or at play
  • With well over 200 design wins of current and future commitments from leading manufacturers worldwide, customer adoption of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series of graphics processors has increased across a wide range of mobile discrete notebook segments, including the HP Pavilion dv6T, Alienware M17, Acer Aspire 5739G, Toshiba Satellite M500, Sony VAIO FW Series, Samsung R522, Asus W90Vp-X1, MSI GX623 and Dell Studio 15 -- a balanced portfolio of AMD- and competitor-based notebook platforms
  • An augmented presence in retail, including Best Buy Canada and Future Shop with a focus on the HP Pavilion dv6 Artist Edition Entertainment Notebook PC featuring AMD Turion Ultra X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics

"As consumers' increasingly demand greater visual computing capabilities in their notebooks, the market for discrete graphics is only expected to grow," said Dr. Jon Peddie, founder and principal, Jon Peddie Research. "The increase in volume in the second quarter of this year, and in AMD's mobile discrete market share, is a testament to consumers' appetite for visual computing, and manufacturers' readiness to satisfy it as we move into what has traditionally been the busiest season of the year."

"AMD has worked diligently to introduce technology that gives people an incredibly compelling visual experience on a notebook platform, and the latest market data showing the phenomenal uptake of ATI Mobility Radeon based notebooks validates the quality of both our products and that experience," said Matt Skynner, Vice President & General Manager, GPU Division, AMD. "We're moving into the back-to-school and holiday seasons, and there's also the upcoming Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. AMD continues to provide the solutions for the mobile discrete market and ATI Mobility Radeon based notebooks."

I have a feeling that nVidia's screw-up with their last generation of mobile GPUs has something to do with this.

Very cool. Now all we need is a more robust, more energy-efficient processor to do their platform justice...

One user of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 is flowing by.I think it's time for ATI to roll out Mobility Catalyst on all current windows' platforms now.Getting annoying to revise INF every time to install a new driver with every new release.Don't push the responsibilty to the notebooks' manufacturers, because they do not produce these chips and lazy in updating them.

Mobility modder hasn't been reliable with the new Cat 9's, even after releasing a new version, people are still finding it difficult to get up to date drivers loaded.

I love AMD descreet GPUs for lappies, but your math is terribly off. The 4870 is prices very well just below the GTX260 (cheapest available), but the GTX 260 is not a 9800 GT. A 9800 GT is not even in the same ballpark as the 4870 and GTX260.

A GeForce GTX 260M is the same as a GeForce 9800 GT, specs wise. Mobility HD4870 is the same as its desktop counterpart.

There are still people with lack of knowledge about nvidia's fail naming scheeme :p

Almost same as desktop counterpart(4870 that is) core clock is downclocked slightly to decrease power requirement, but is same specs wise in shaders, rops, tpu's and memory subsystem etc.

Didn't realize he was talking about Mobility chips. I hate Nvidia's naming scheme...well for everything.

The specs are really nice (especially the HD4650) for that HP dv6 however it looks like the exterior was designed by some stoner from the 60's and makes me want to vomit, too bad, I'm sure if they had choices of different solid colors it would be a much better seller.......sigh, guess I will have to keep on looking and waiting for a 15.4" screen with ati 4600 series discrete graphics.

Dell's Studio XPS 16 can come with an ATI Mobility 4670 1GB and 15.6" display.

Thanks, nice to see, however, customizing the equivalent on dells canada site comes to $1340 vs the $1000 of the HP, as soon as there is XPS in the tittle dell takes the broomstick to your ass lol

W00T! Nvidia didn't stand a chance. I gotta admit, my friend's Toshiba lappie with an 8800M sucked on Crysis. He runs on low while my other friend's HD 2600XT equipped lappie runs fine on mostly Mid settings. Strange.

Very good, I think it also has a lot to do with AMD/ATIs media playback abilities as well. They are pretty damn good with it and very efficient with power and energy. I Agree now they need to get a bit more energy efficient on their processors and take the P2 and really fly with that architecture with some adjustments made to really combat Intel on a head to head format.
