XFX Readies HD 4650 AGP Graphics Card, Too

Following the likes of Sapphire, HIS, and PowerColor, XFX unveiled a Radeon HD 4600 series accelerator based on ye olde AGP-8X interface, its first ATI GPU based graphics card on the interface. The XFX Radeon HD 4650 sticks to the trademark XFX-ATI color scheme, with a black PCB and heatsink, with red-colored connectors. The cooler design confines the card to a single-slot space, and consists of a fan nested into the heatsink.

The card features 320 stream processors, a GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and 128-bit DDR2 memory running at 800 MHz. It comes in two variants: 512 MB and 1 GB. The usual output configuration of dual DVI-D and HDTV connectors is in place. The latest Radeon HD 4000 series feature-set is in place, including DirectX 10.1 support, UVD 2.0, and AvivoHD. The 1 GB variant is priced at US $90, so expect the 512 MB one to be priced lower.

Nice price ($90=EUR 65), nice feature set, for 1GB AGP card. 2x DVI out is rare on the newer AGP cards, and is usually found on the FireGL or 3850 series only. So this is great for a "workstation"/dual screen player.

If this thing is also QUIET, I would use this to swap out older cards in some of the older machines in the family/soho.

The heatsink/fan setup on this new XFX HD4650 AGP doesn't look too quiet. Small useless fan + 2-pin wiring = expect annoyingly noisy operation.

Agree. The heatsink/fan combo could be better... but it is still better than the competitors 4650 offerings. Shame they dont "finish off AGP" with a better quality effort. Afer all, the HD3850 was a great AGP. This is now a bit lame...

IDE and VGA just won't die too. Neither will COM! And OMG some people still use BIOS and not EFI. Why are wireless a/b/g adapters still available? Awful isnt it? And s775? They should make all current software incompatible with s775. Oh, wait...

Actually, $90 = €90. Despite the fact that $90 is worth €65, it will be priced at €90, as always and the PCI-e version from Sapphire is €55.

The ASUS version is currently at EUR 70, so this XFX will come in somewhere close... EUR 75-80. But quite right, prices are higher in EU than is US... but then sales taxes are included in EU, whereas in US you need to add them on.

The fact that sales taxes in the US are SO MUCH LOWER than is the EU is a different question altogether.

As you suspect, DONT "upgrade" from a 3850 to a 4650. The 4670 is better than the 4650, and the HD3850 is neck and neck with the 4670, in fact, the HD3850 is marginally faster in most gaming situations. For shader intensives, the 4670 might *just* win, but 90% of the time, the 3850 will be about 5-10% faster. So the 4650 will be slower still. I guess around 5-20% slower than 3850 depending on application/game...

If gaming, and buying new, I would go for the 4670. I find the HD3850 way too noisy. A 4670 will work with an older PSU too, without stressing it like a 3850 might.

If using dual monitors with DVI, the 4650 makes sense for a workstation/gamer. But outright, the 3850 is still faster... albeit hotter, noiser and higher power consumption.

Damnit -- screw the 1GB DDR2 (or even the 512 MB DDR2). Just give us even 256 MB DDR3, so it'll be decent.
