MSI Readies Redesigned Radeon HD 5770

MSI is readying a new redesigned ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB graphics card. The new R5770-PM2D1G probably replaces the existing one with the same model number, which uses the AMD reference design PCB and cooler. The new design is also looking like a reference design since other board partners are also opting for it, albeit it looks to be simpler. This could also be cheaper to manufacture, and could help bring down prices of the Radeon HD 5770.

The new cooler design consists of the round GPU cooler often spotted on design prototypes from AMD. From its base arise two copper heatpipe that form a circular frame, holding a densely-packed aluminum fin array that projects radially from the center. An 80 mm fan is nested within, blowing air onto these fins, dissipating heat. A plastic shroud sits on top of it, holding the manufacturer graphic. The PCB appears to have remained the same. With this cost cutting, the new MSI HD 5770 1 GB could be had for 130 EUR.

As a result hotter ram chips. Pushes all the heat from core back down onto the chips. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to see a rather detailed review between the two. Reviews of the 4770 sorta just brushed it all off comparing the 2 same differences.

Correct, just the egg shaped plastic is similar. The actual coolers underneath are more like this:

It is no where as good as the stuff from Zalman

Very true, it was just easier to find a picture of the zalman for reference...

I know I've seen the cooler on the HD5770 somewhere else, I could have sworn I saw it for sale somewhere by itself, but I can't find it now.

I was just trying to give an idea of the difference.

HD 5750 cooler is skimpier than that, while this HD 5770 cooler is beefier than that

HD 5750 cooler has the same heatsink under the "egg" shroud as the one on the HD 4770 (cheap version):

The new HD 5770 seems to have the round Zalman-ish cooler often spotted on AMD's prototypes (not to make for a design candidate, but just to keep the prototype functional):

EDIT: Nevermind, it sucks because of the fan. Non-PWM (2pin) fan FTL.

Upon first glance, that cooler looked like a whale. A fail whale. On second glance, it looked indeed eggish. It probably contains a fail chick.

I prefer my videocard to suck, not blow.

Those types of coolers are not good for certain crossfire configurations where the cards are close together.

The PWM control is internal (on the card). The two leads are merely +/- for the motor.

So it should be just like the HD 4770? The fan can be controlled, but fan monitoring is non-existant, since it lacks the third (or theoretically fourth) wire.
