its kinda nice cause it means that there will be true benchmarks so we can see wether agp+ddr is actually that much worse than pcie+ddr2 thanx intel about time you did something right so if anyone has an intel 865 chiipset and conroe or via p4m800(both ddr+agp 8x) and conroe it would be a cool test to se how the compared to the intel 965 chipsets (ddr2+pcie)

It began with socket 478, but it can handle Core 2 Duo and Pentium D CPU's. Just look at the AsRock ConRoe 865PE!!!

Yes, it is possible, but I think socket 775 has more contacts with CPU. Both 875P and 865PE are capable but you would have to reengineer socket 478, which will probably never happen!

Speaking of CPU bottlenecks, I think this card will be bottlenecked on anything lower than Socket 939/754 AGP. I wouldn't put one in a 478 P4 system.

Also depending on how much faster this card is than my current card X800XTPE. I might purchase one.

I read somewhere today that the 875P/865PE were the best chipsets from Intel since 440BX. I have also read that the 915/925 chipsets were underperformers. I read that the 945 chipset is a better performer than the 955/975 chipsets. I know that 865 chipset boards cost around $50. bucks now. I'll probably stick with DDR, AGP, and a high end CPU for a while since they are still making GOOD AGP video cards.

if you get a card like a 1950pro, i think you could prolly play at 1280x1024 or 16*12, and use at least some AA and AF, plus HDR. while a good cpu would help, the cpu will make a change of 120fps from 100fps at low res, or 49-46fps at high res/quality.

I have the Powercolor X800GTO 256MB AGP version.

While it certainly suits my needs and is holding me over until I get my new rig, Powercolor has a tendency to lock their cards (mines locked in at 12 pipelines, impossible to unlock 16, (unlike the Ati or Sapphire)

It might be worth it though if you still have AGP

865 outperforms 915 but for low end chips get a via chipset yah i said it get a via

I think so many peeps on this forum (long timers) have had bad experiences with VIA that we consider it ONLY for low power devices like micro- and nano-ITX. Speed still sucks, but you get a small silent low power box.

VIA might be doing some really good stuff now, but they aren't breaking the reputation they earned in the past.

Just like 440BX was the best chipset for Pentium3 (faster and allowed more memory than the later 815 chipset), I have also found by experience that 865/875 is better than 915. Not experience comparing 945 vs. 965/75.

The latest 865/875 Core 2 mainboards are CHEAP, allow you to recycle your DDR sticks (which are just as fast as DDR2 until you hit the 1000 Mhz mark), and allow you to recycle your AGP card, and possibly upgrade to X1950pro performance.

Guess what, if you are moving from a s478 to s775 but stay on the same intel chipset, then there's no need to reinstall the OS. Just swap the mainboards and "go".

(You will have to uninstall old drivers and reinstall new drivers for peripherals like sound, network, integrated GPU etc, but ONLY if they have changed during your mainbaord swap).

Dead fast to do. And you can slot in the latest and greatest intel Core 2's.

Sysprep is very easy to use...and you can use it with any hardware change at all (besides a hard drive swap ...obviously )

hey my via chipped machspeed amd was THE fastest s754 mobo for sub $60 and if you look in the sciencemark comparo it did admirably beating out all the other s754 cus by a good bit thank you very much

i have a s478 p4 3.4EE with x800xt agp atm and am wondering how badly my cpu will bottleneck this card, i would really like to buy one for my system so then i can get a PCIe system a bit cheaper once dx10 prices have dropped a bit..

Will my system bottleneck?

I'm interested in upgrading my video card with this when it comes out, but i want to make sure my system won't bottleneck it before i waste my money. I currently have a BFG 6800GT OC (that's not overclocked) and it really doesn't cut the mustard anymore for the newer games. If anyone can tell me with any kind of certainty if my system can handle it I would greatly appreciate it.

How much of an overclock are we talking? I only have stock cooling on the CPU and my case (hp pavillion) isn't exactly that cool inside. Wouldn't i be asking for trouble overclocking it?

I'm not even sure i CAN overclock with my BIOS. Stupid HP locks everything out.

No problems

You probably dont even need much of an OC, like your CPU and RAM only *mainly* load up bots and AI characters. So if you play online, the graphics card does all the work, hence, dont need such a powerful CPU. And current games are still only recommending like 1.7-2Ghz processors, so your well clear. its obviously different from game to game, like battlefield will need like a 3Ghz+ where as need 4 speed carbon only needs a 1.7

but yea, point is, you should be rite (unless u like playing games like BF2142 on max settings with 64 bots )
