@ newtek
you are right of course,
but the only other issue i ever had with a company that polarized my outlook so much was HP with the firmware issues on the ml110..completely broke my faith in the company......apologies for the off topic but these are the issues that affect me personally and i find inexcusable so i will never spend money with the companies involved as i find the error inexcusable...other companies such as ATI in the 2900 era (i gather that is your point) i managed to avoid in my personal upgrade cycle

I'm not talking HD2900 era, those cards ran hot but didn't overheat to the point of failure, I'm talking HD4800 era...

And your personal preference is fine, however keep it to yourself, and certainly don't jump on every opertunity to bash the company you get. When you start doing that it goes from having a perference to trolling. Especially when your only beef with the company is some problems with a RAID controller from 2004...

Big fail with these drivers. These aren't just like those "early" drivers that keep the GPU hot, but that the bug keeps the fan at low speeds even as temperatures cross critical points when these particular apps are running...till you begin to see artifacts, framerate drops, etc (things which happen to overheated GPUs).

What worries me the most is that they are WHQL drivers. If these were beta drivers I'd be more inclined to shrug it off, as we all take chances with beta drivers, but WHQL drivers should not have an issue like this.

But in all seriousness, this has likely killed some cards out there :(

It has:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=161391&st=100

And more threads there too. What I've read is 9800GT is the one most dead with melting plastic smell, 8800GTX too. 7950GTX to GTX280 reported to have problems.

Think I'll roll driver back too, even though my fan works, They'll have a new driver out soon, if it's something simple to fix, like the registry thing on that above thread.

So if you went with a custom cooler and it saved your card, money well spent :)

Has this been posted here yet?

lol, just linked to same link from above post - edited so as not to be noobish. But my sympathies to those it's affected - it's not funny.

Condolences to those who've suffered :(

What do I do now.... I did not even know there was problem till the video started acting very odd, then I opened the MSI afterburner to find my GPU at 150c, 30sec later full lock, and now the GPU temp will not drop to less than 90c even with the fan forced at 100%... (I reinstalled my old 9800GTX+, along with the .21 drivers...)

/wave BFG GTX285OCE I loved you...

Yeah this could potentially damage your card beyond repair. How could Nvidia be allowed to release a driver with a bug as bad as this? :shadedshu Would it be covered in a warranty if the card was damaged from over-heating?

I didn't even know about this because I'm still running 195.62;)

this is offtopic but could be relevant the asus GTX275 with stock bios has a bug. The card always runs in 3D performance mod even in desktop for me. If anyone hast this issue a bios flash can help.
I flashed the OC'ed EVGA GTX 275 bios (713/1512/1260), can be found in the GPU-Database.

Note: I'm not responsible if u brick ur card. ;)

It isn't an issue of nVidia being allowed to release the driver, well kind of considering it is WHQL, but nVidia is really allowed to do whatever they want.

The bigger question I have is how did nVidia allow this driver to not only be released, but to be released as WHQL. A problem like this should have definitely been caught very quickly in testing...

Yes, because nothing ATi has ever released overheats...

At least nVidia's problem is a simple software issue that can easily be fixed, and not a hardware issue...

Oh, and we are all still worried about those horrible RAID issues, from way back in 2004, how was ATi's chipset doing back then...oh they didn't have any...well then...

To be honest people just jump on the bandwagon with negative press like ATi is some godlike creature and Nvidia is the Antichrist. Ati has tons of issues with drivers still. I should know as I have two 5870's right now, and trying to find the best drivers.

The new cards from Nvidia are a completely new design and I would rather wait for release than see it be released with problematic drivers. That is most likely what we are waiting on due to the new architecture I would think. Nvidia cooling designs are almost always given more than enough cooling power lately(8 series through current gen). Ati has started to with 5-series designs too, which is great to see. I will say that the reference fan assembly on my 5870's are the same loudness I encountered with gtx295's which are louder than every other gtx 2xx I have owned. The average WOW player wouldn't know how to turn up the fan speed so Nvidia has to fix it in the driver.

:):):)I had to dump the stock cooler or I couldn't game over the summer. The thermalright cooler was a pain to put on (memory heatsinks hard to stick) but I'm feeling kinda  right now.

I just got called up a friend of mine, and we were just talking about nothing and he brought up that his GTX275 died last night while folding, and he updated to the .75's, that sux, he is sure the fan never turned on.

don't know if msi will replace his card

it seems that anyone who installed the drivers and had a 8800GTX or a hot running card, these drivers were basically instant death once something 3D started but it seems this is only the case on nvidia's own pcb's

Eew, quite a new card. 40% would be the minimum, but if it's 0% then it's no wonder if cards are popping. GT200 has throttle in 105C, but can it save a card that's passive, guess not.

Warranty should replace burnt out cards, that is if they were stock and new enough to have it left. Different thing is will it? They might see driver as user inflicted damage.

all I know is I had to replace a MSI motherboard once and learned MSI sucks when it comes to warranties so I feel kinda bad for him right now.

That's the sad thing, they have a better driver team than ATi. But ATi's driver team has been getting much better lately. They don't have as many games that aren't supported anymore which is an obvious sign of improvement.

I didn't experience overheating with that driver set on WoW (and checked them after installation on Wednesday with HWMonitor - just a habit of mine with new drivers for the first day or so). Tried them with a GTX 260 on XP. I still went back to 196.21 as a precaution.

This was a huge mistake, HUGE!

Complete and utter failure from the programmers and testing teams.

After endless rebranding *whoever fault it is, doesn't matter* this, the driver that destroys video cards... This does not look good guys, get it together!

I was even holding off on buying a new card waiting for Nvidia to show something.....
And nothing, + this....

I lost 2 GT220s and a 9500GT that were running F@H, all under warranty thankfully.
