IGN reports that running the initial WiiConnect 24 update on the Wii could potentially destroy your gaming console. After installation, you are most likely to obtain an error code which effectively prevents you from doing anything with your system. Several error codes have been reported so far, but the most prevalent of them are 110213 and 32002.

IGN contacted Nintendo, which offered 2 solutions. If you have no data saved on your Wii that is important to keep, you can contact Nintendo, which will ship a new console out to you within 3-4 business days. The problem becomes more complicated if you have data that you want to keep - most importantly, Virtual console data (while virtual console games can be re-downloaded, the data saved on your console regarding which games you have downloaded is tied to your system). If this applies to you, then you will have to follow a different procedure. Again, you should contact Nintendo, which will send you a shipping label (takes 4-10 business days), which you then use to send the console back to the factory. Repairs will take 8-10 business days, once the unit is fully functional it will be sent back to you.

At the moment, Nintendo is intensively working on a fix for this problem.

Don't they test their updates? I'm still getting a Wii but I'm glad by the time I have mine it should be sorted. I'm not a fan of a console automatically updating it's firmware without your control myself, but at least Nintendo are send out replacements pretty quick.

Go Nintendo, way to release an update that kills you systems! I am glad I haven't updated mine, and probably never will thanks to this. Also the 3-4 business day waiting period is really bull. You screwed up, overnight me a damn new on you crappy POS company.

I am going to get a Wii but I think I will wait around 2 months after the UK launch and just watch the price drop. I will just stick with me PC and 360 till that happens.

With the first batch of 360s overheating, crashing and bricking within the first weeks of use, and now Nintendo killing their Wiis with their own update routine, it seems Sony has had the cleanest release of a console for this generation so far.

I mean, there are some compatibility problems with PSOne and PS2 games, and I heard the browser is kinda slow, but at least so far there have not been reports of hardware failures for the PS3, but I guess that could change in time, every new console is bound to have problems when the first batch reaches the public, that's why I intend to wait about a year to either get a PS3 or a 360.

I still have to open my first gen PS2 and clean the optical lens from time to time when I get a disc read error :( I won't fall into that trap again :p

Yeah, but - if it hasn't changed drastically by now - more PS3s than PS3 Games have been sold. :)

This is REALLY UNLUCKY for Nintendo.

How much would it take for some other company (mentioning no names) to pay off a Nintendo techie to bug the update?

The PR damage of this event is greater than any marketing budget a SONY or MS could throw at the media.

This is quite funny. I don't know how something like this could get through testing stages... lol. Oh well, I've never had a problem with either of my first-gen 360's and the only console to ever blow me off when I put games in was my PS2... I didn't even enjoy playing on that thing... I hate Sony controllers - they're too light!

hey at least you get a knew one its not like nintendo is trying to play it off on hackers think it could be worse i mean if windows worked this way you know everytime they f***up you get it fixed there would be much better OS' out there know and no one would have to deal with VISTA which i might add if they didnt spend so much time counter hacking it might be a good OS but then again it is M$

One more reason to NOT buy this crap at all.

Bet this FUBAR cost Nintendo a few bucks.

I hate Sony controllers - they're too light!

You'll be really pissed to see how light the PS3 controllers are. With the removal of the rumble feature, it feels like you're playing with a baby's toy. I would trade rumble for the sixaxis control ANY DAY.

BTW, the wii's controller sucks so far. It's a cool Idea, but it's FAR from perfect. It has too much lag, and It doesn't really follow your movements. On top of that, how does nintendo have the nerve to release a system with 640x480 max resolution? I have the wii, and let me tell you that the only game worth buying is zelda (so far). The Wii is a child's toy.

for me the sony pads are the best, they fit perfect in your hand and cause the least stress when using them and thats why for 3 generations of console the design has changed very little. that is the only good thing i can say about sony realy.

at this rate the ps3's should be expected to catch fire any day now...i'd rather they get through all the screw-ups early this third time around since 4 out of my 5 ps1/ps2s all right after the warranty. 1 died in the first 60 days, and i only used it once (i was away at school and it sat for a while.)

bad luck at the first two of three console launches is not saying much for the third launch, and the Wii didnt seem rushed at all...
