Radeon HD 5830 Gets Price-Cuts, Takes Aim at GeForce GTX 460

I have a small Question . Why the card is 200 $ in US and 200 pounds in UK ?
Ho makes the cost of the products ? why the people in europe have to pay more for the same article ?

Plenty of HD5830's to be had for a fair bit less than £200 and the 768MB 460 ($200) can be had for arond £155 -160. $200 = £130, then add the additional taxes and duty and you get fairly close, we do pay a premium but often it's our own greedy retailers who seize on the opportunity to hike their profit.

Now that a good buy, better even than the 460 in terms of value at least.

Original MSRP is $299 and $399.

The original launch MSRP was $260 USD for the 5850, i dont remember what the 5870 was but i think it was $100 more.

I agree that the 5850 needs a price cut, but not because of a threat from the GTX460. In all the reviews I've seen, you need that GTX460 over 800mhz (core) to come near the performance of a stock HD 5850 (which is actually impressive BTW), but overclock the HD 5850 and that is long gone.

IMHO, this is the price point the HD 5830 should've launched at. They've been asking way too much for this ROP crippled Evergreen. If they would've just dropped the stream processor count down to 1120 units but left the ROP amount alone, then this card would've been much better.

I also agree. They need to cut the 5850 as the 1MB GTX460 is a competitor to it. Even if overclocking the 5850 puts it ahead, people will be swayed by the huge price difference.

And I'm not just say this because I want a cheap 5850. Really. Seriously.

no -Retailers try to keep you paying the old price for as long as possible after the announcement then cut the price when a savvy customers question them on price.

but the people i usually buy from dont do that thank god. most of them are quite open to bargaining. but I have been to places where I was about to spend a absaloute fortune on new parts for a new system & they wouldnt even give me £20 off for spending almost over £600 - its retailers like that who dont last very long.

At $199, HD 5830 is faster than GTX 460 768MB ($199), and has higher performance per dollar compared to GTX 460 1GB ($229, which performs on par).

What benchmarks have you been looking at?

Those charts are much newer then the 5850 release. Hes right. The 5850 was 250-260 when it came out. That only lasted about a week however.

EDIT: After thinking about this a little bit more, I'm willing to reach an agreement. It is very probable that the original MSRP when the cards were "paperlaunched" (22 S) was 300 and 400, so I am right. And it's also posible that when the cards actually launched 2 weeks later MSRP was 260, because I remember that you didn't have to read more than 3 posts in any review discussion before finding a complain about the high price (remember that people was expecting same price as with HD4800). AMD was smart and lowered the price, hoping no one would remember the original price. But well I do.

I kicked myself for waiting like I did. It cost me 50 bucks because I didnt buy it on day one. The only reason the price went up was demand was so damn high.

Launch cards all (ALL=HIS, Saphire and Asus lol) had $30 off deal. I remember that very well too. So maybe that's why they got them so cheap, but believe me and believe the links because I didn0t make them up.
