Oracle corporation is on a big buying spree after this year's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, a prominent server builder. Oracle wants to strengthen its enterprise IT business with the acquisition of a major chip-maker, right now AMD, IBM (its processor division), and NVIDIA are being named by prominent analysts. "You're going to see us buying chip companies," Ellison, 66, said yesterday at Oracle's annual meeting in San Francisco. Currently its subsidiary, Sun Microsystems has its own processor architecture, the SPARC. Gleacher & Co. analyst Doug Freedman predicts Oracle is chasing AMD, IBM (chip division) and NVIDIA. "You've got to think it's focused on enterprise hardware, on the server," he said. "AMD jumps off the screen."

Hmmm makes me wonder if amd would be the best purchase for them as they could get both cpu and gpu I.P for use in servers but i have to wonder if amd would sell.
Then again as oracle has 16 core cpu's (8 threads per core for 128 threads per cpu source) then would nvidia be the best buy for its gpu I.P although ocne again i have to wonder if they would sell.

Any thoughts on that?

God i hope not - Oracle have been TERRIBLE for Java - they've completely killed the open forum for discussing ideas on how to move the language forward and aren't talking to anyone about what they're doing with the language. Nothing good has come from that purchase.

Plus i must LOL at analysts discussing IBM selling it's chip division to Oracle - that would be like AMD selling Intel their graphics division (Oracle and IBM are in direct competition in key areas).

Great - Oracle is attempting to become a total solutions provider with hardware and software now. Personally I hope to God that this doesn't happen, as Oracle has been very crappy with MySQL and other Sun products since the merger.

And I really couldn't imagine Oracle purchasing AMD, but stranger things have happened.....

Oracle is a horrible, horrible company, and if they buy AMD I'm going Intel.

That should be enough evidence of my loathing of Oracle.

IBM's processor division makes more sense -- big iron is what IBM does, aside from a few chips in PS3's and XBox360's and the like.

I just don't see IBM lopping off its chip division, either way this is going to be fun

Oracle are very good at making enterprise databases - but thats it.....everything else they have touch´ed is going the wrong way .... and for gods sake, don´t touch AMD - they have enough trouble as it is

I have to agree to those, who states that nothing good can come from this. Oracle is crap, its like shitty version of microsoft. They have lots of money, but their products are shit (like sql-developer, oracle designer or jdeveloper eg). There are no real innovations in oracle db since forever. Oracle DB tools sucks, their db-drivers are buggy, their installators sucks, only good thing those databases are fast and scalable enough. I almost puked when i heard about acquisition of Sun (because of java mostly). I am almost sure they bought MySql just to stop it's rapid evolution, which definately scared some fat oracle folks.

If Oracle buys IBM, courts could see that as anti-trust because they already own SPARC (about IBM's only competitor in supercomputing).

Oracle is right up there with Apple and Adobe of companies I love to hate. I hope they do nothing or go with IBM and get filled with holes in the courts. I think, for them, NVIDIA would be the best investment because a lot of super computers are moving in the direction of GGPU computing which would round out Sun's portfolio and also be good for NVIDIA giving them a processor to develop chipsets exclusively for.

No, Oracle definitely bought MySQL to stop its evolution. And now they're suing around Google/Android land because of supposed Java infringements. They're a horrible company.

their products are not shitty. that guy just had a bad experience. their products are excellent and you just have to ask 99% of the people who run their systems around the globe.

To be honest i think their hardware sounds great if you need it (4 socket server with 16 core processor's that support 8 thread's per core for a total of 512 threads and 512gb of ram :rockout:)

That analyst must be a moron to name those companies.
If Oracle would buy anything, it would be Fujitsu's CPU division and nothing else.

i think they will buy IBM or Fujitsu's processor division, why? why not?, IBM has sold off its notebook division to lenovo etc

btw AMD now has a big cash cow so you can rule them out of this and NVIDIA is out of question to, why? NVIDIA is a bit picky and wont be buillied by another company :p

I admit i would hope that neither nvidia or amd are bought by them as right not on the gpu front it looks as things will be going well for both companys now and in the near future.

Yes, NVIDIA stock is pushing for this buy. So the analyst must be highly credible. Oracle just needs a cash-cow chip maker. Not someone that makes a few thousand chips an year like Sun does with its SPARC processors.

Really? Hmm then i go back to my point that nvidia would be a good buy for their server gpu's as i am sure they would go great with 128 threaded cpu's.
