I ain't saying the pc or monitor can't run the game, it sure can, although it will be less fun.
TBH, you current monitor is better considering lower resolutions meaning you can play the game at higher settings with less lag, however if you planning on upgrading to a 20inch, the native resolution will increase, decreasing gaming performace unless graphical settings are lowered. I suggest getting crossfire with a second hand 4830 for cheap which can help bump up the settings a little on a new monitor, this is the best gaming performace upgrade available to you since any better graphics will just get bottlenecked by the CPU. Maybe another 1GIG or 2GIG stick of ram could be useful. Hopefully your CPU cooler is in a push/pull configuration. You won't really be needing more than just an extra fun directly above the cpu cooler, all others would just be cosmetics and be extremely noisy, hope you don't sleep in the same room and download torrents. There My 2 cents worth on computers.

If you are going to buy the HD 6870,then you've got a little problem there. It wont fit in you case...and I hope you are aware that if you are planning to buy an i5,you will have to change a lot of things, like the motherboard, cpu cooler..
