MSI Rolls Out Radeon HD 6800 Series Graphics Cards

MSI announced its Radeon HD 6800 series graphics cards, the HD 6870 based R6870-2PM2D1GD5, and the HD 6850 based R6850-PM2D1GD5. While the HD 6870 card sticks to AMD reference design both with PCB and cooling assembly, the HD 6850 uses AMD reference design PCB, with MSI's in-house cooler design, which makes use of a slightly larger GPU fan-heatsink, and a sporty-looking cooler shroud. Both cards also stick to reference clock speeds.

While the Radeon HD 6870 has 1120 stream processors, and clock speeds of 900 MHz core with 1050 MHz (4200 MHz effective) memory; the HD 6850 has 960 stream processors, 775 MHz core, 1000 MHz (4000 MHz effective) memory. The prices are expected to be largely standard, too. Around $250 for the HD 6870, and around $180 for the HD 6850.

Seriously. But really, you don't ever see the sticker or anything they put on the card anyways. And you can always peel it off.

I removed the sticker on my 4870.... never again, it took well over an hour as the backing either sticks and it tears the paper middle in half leaving loads of glue and paper on the card or it peels off properley but leaves all of the glue, so much scraping, peeling and rubbing alcohol.
No matter how bad the sticker is i will never try to remove another..... mainly as i'm lazy and don't like breathing methanol

The cooler on the 6850 is basically the same as they used in their 9600GT line (with clear red acrylic shroud, and a girl pics), just different shroud.And I think this one looks like a "joker edition" to me

Why are companies only releasing reference designed cards for the 6870? Reference cards always run hot. I probably missed something in the massive 6000 series thread.

The sticker won't always face down as it depends on the case or even lack of, I don't use a case at the moment.

About the reference cards only, it's a limitation from AMD (as far as i have read), it's always the same at release all cards are reference unless they are specifically exempt like the 6850, 5830, 4830 and many more, although as far as i know that's usually as a cost cutting measure so there is always nothing special for a while after launch.

Ahh okay, thanks for pointing that out. I figured that AMD limited certain cards to reference design only.

I didn't think about people who don't use cases, thanks for pointing that out as well.

You can't forget about the owners of the antec skeleton, lian li pitstop and other open bench cases that im too lazy to find the names but there is quite a few out there now.

I do admit though the majority of people will be unable to see the sticker in their case no matter how hard they try to so your original point is valid to most of the people who are complaining about how bad the stickers look.
But i geuss it shows that looks play an importaint part when it comes down to choosing a graphics card... even if the buyer can't see it once installed

This is a heatsink built like a zalman vf1000 with a shroud attached

Or like this zerotherm cooler

It's not a unique design it's one many oems have adopted.

Asus certainly were not the first people to invent such a thing XD

I guess I better prepare to explain to clients the differences in HD 5000 and 6000 series naming schemes and performance levels (e.g. why 5870 vs 6870 performance isn't what one would expect).

Ever thought of trying it with a kettle and steam it off ?.. Yeah and of course ya would have to take the cooler off hahah.

i wish i had thought of that at the time I had taken the cooler off as i was uing a vf1000 on the card at the time so i could have done that so easly.

I definitely think that would have helped out a lot, getting the glue off was easy with some rubbing alcohol the problem was the bits of paper stuck to it but i'm sure if the glue was heated it would have come off in one piece.
