Plextor Intros PX-LB950SA Internal Blu-ray Writer Drive

Plextor rolled out its latest Blu-ray product, the PX-LB950SA internal Blu-ray writer drive. Armed with a SATA interface and 8 MB of cache, the PX-LB950SA can burn Blu-ray discs at 12X for BD-R, 8X for double-layer BD-R, and 2X for double-layer BD-RE. DVDs are burned at 16X for DVD-R/+R, 12X for DVD-RAM, 8X for DVD-R/+R (double-layer) and DVD-RW and 6x for DVD-RW. The drive also features LightScribe technology, with which it can burn labels onto compatible media. A copy of CyberLink PowerDVD 9 BD Suite is also bundled. Plextor's latest drive is priced at €179.

well back then they also cost 3 times the amount of a generic drive.

Optical drives are so cheap to manufacture, i could never understand the $200 dollar price tag, wouldn't pay more than $50 for drive with the latest tech.

I think plextor uses sonys with custom firmware, at least for the dvd drives. I got one of their dvd burners, much quieter than my samsungs. If there's a speed penalty I haven't noticed, but I can't think how else they could quiet it. The enclosures are so thin there's not much they could do on that end.

Yuck man Sony make some of the worst lasers in the business. At least in the consoles, every revision from experience of a friend of mine who done chips for the PS2 and PS1, every time he got a new revision the "newer" lasers were substantially weaker than the last series. If this is indeed true then that throws my idea of owning a nice Plextor drive out the window.

True but they had a lot more features than the competing drives too. I loved their error checking capabilities with PlexTools.

agreed. you definitely got what you paid for which is why i chose them over the generics. but i am guessing they simply could not stay in business with today's competition. they need a new business model because having a reliable and powerful optical drive can be very useful.
