Super-analysts at Gartner have something to say about Microsoft and its Windows software. For those of you unfamiliar with the company, Gartner is the largest IT industry analyst firm in the world, and it got there for a reason - it's pretty good at its guesses.

Gartner estimates that Windows Vista will be the last Windows as we know it. The company predicts that it is too difficult and expensive to keep pushing box sales for new versions.

Perhaps a modular architecture, where you download updated versions of modules that piece together the OS, is on its way?

Well, virtual content is going to have to change, but saying that Vista will be bought piece by piece through the Internet other than sold in boxes dosent affect it at all and it dosent mean that there will be no new Windows after Windows Vista in 2012. Just like we cant forsee Playstation 4, we cant forsee Vista - its just too far from now.

This has been said a long time ago. And I believe pretty soon their is going to be modular O/S's.

Plus it's not the end of Microsoft, and not the end of Windows... just this type of windows...
Gartner estimates that Windows Vista will be the last Windows as we know it.
There will definitely be a windows coming out being modular IF that's how O/S's are going to be programmed... Which is plausible.

would you want to pay $30 for being able to start your pc, $30 for having networking, $30 for an internet browser, $30 to play mp3s, $30 to play video, $30 for directx ?

maybe they could give you windows free, but you would pay per minute of use .. some way or another they will have to make their money

I guess, if I understood you correctly? You think MS is b.s.'ing here about this being the last Windows, of NT-based underpinnings design.

They're moving to a NEW type of OS & its design is actually pretty different in many ways from current NT-based heritage'd OS from MS.

Look up "SINGULARITY" online, W1zz, because I think you'll like a great deal of what you see in the writeups on it, & as to how they plan to construct it... Microsoft R&D sections @ MS should have a TON on it.

To me, for TODAY's hardware? It seems a bit much, & will be slower initially, but when the time comes for them to release it, I wager the hardware will be RIGHT IN LINE with it, as to making it run fast.

(From what I understood? Even DRIVERS will be in separated instances of memory sandboxes, from the OS core & one another, as to one example of what's changing in it, but still will be able to address the process space of other RPL3/Ring3/usermode apps as usual & same w/ services (which are typically brokered in the SAME address space as svchost.exe etc. et al))

We already have some of this.

Ever tried to join a domain on XP Home?
Or tried to set user rights in XP Home?

Ever been able to use more than 2 desktops on XP Pro?
How about network faxing built in to XP?

We already do, but for those that only want e-mail and internet it might be the ticket to have a OS that costs less, and only performs those functions.

The downside to this all is that those who use a bit of everything are going to have to pay out the nose, switch OS choice, or never have the latest and greatest.

Fortunately for those users smart enought to make the choice, there are linux flavors out that have the bare essentials that run fast on mediocre hardware. However, based on the popularity of myspace, AOL, and adware, we as a species only survive due to the fact that sex is fun.

I think it would be nice if it was modular but not too expensive - then us gamers could download what we need without all the fancy crap to make it do pointless things or look slightly different but impact performance. Vista uses so much more ram than XP and, other than DX10, doesn't really have many advantages for the gaming community. I know DX10 will be vital one day but it could have been made for XP if M$ wanted to, but admittedly businesses will want to make money.

99.98% of the userbase will not care whats going on inside their OS .. i think they want the platform they can get their work/games done

i think microsoft will always have to have somekind older version working style with every version of windows they make because the day they make one totally diffrent from anything before it people who have been looking for an alternative will have a reason to change as it would be an alien os to them so it isnt microsofts best intrests to radically change windows operating stlye.

I'll doubtless agree on that, just like most folks feel that their car internal technologies is something cool/efficient/state-of-the-art (or not), BUT, ONLY REALLY want it to get them to point B from point A... "ignorance is bliss" etc.

LOL, man... you know, I have had the final "RC" candidate for it here via download, for like 3-4 months now, & STILL have not gotten around to 'giving it a go'... one of these days!

Why? To me XP looks like Lego by default and Vista definitely is Duplo compared to that. It really looks disgusting, then again I hate XP as well which many people seem to like. I would say Vista will be a success no matter what.
