AMD implemented its plans to rebrand Radeon HD 5700 series to HD 6700 series, by listing up Radeon HD 6770 and HD 6750 on its website. For now, it's available only to OEMs. There are no changes between the 5700 and 6700 as far as specifications go, except HDMI 1.4a support. At most, you can see a different-looking cooler shroud on the reference-design graphics cards. Other than that, they're the same. The HD 6770 is based on the 40 nm Juniper silicon, with 800 VLIW5 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory over a 128-bit wide memory interface. The HD 6750 on the other hand has 720 stream processors. There's no information at present on when (or if) AMD plans to release this to the consumer market.

Rebrands don't matter. Do your research before you buy and you will be fine.

I just wonder if we will see the same people going "ZOMG REBRAND I'M NEVER BUYING ATI AGAIN" that said it about nVidia when they rebranded G92(ignoring that ATi had done it previously with R580)... I wonder were those people are going to go now? Back to nVidia, or maybe Matrox or S3?

I think its stupid although in the grand scheme it wont make much difference if there is a card the same with another name.

Its a bit like with the cars OPEL Astra and the Vauxhaul Astra same thing.

Thats the problem dude. How many folk come on here saying "Tell me what gfx card to buy". It's those people that don't google searches that end up buying a 6 series card thinking (rightly so in normal terms) it'll be better than a 5 series.

I mean, a Peugeot 406 is better than a 306 right?

It's a bad idea to rebrand. Nvidia did it like crazy buggers and it wasn't good then, it still isn't good now.

All that being said, I think if you're buying components and you dont do any research into your possible purchase, you deserve a rebrand! ;)

I'm curious...if it's only OEM who will be able to buy a 6770? How can anyone warn someone not to buy a 6770/6750 if they have a 5770/5750 already installed in their PC?

In any case, it's apparent to me that these aren't announced as Turks and Caicos.

You would only get this if you buy an OEM PC(DELL,HP, ETC) with one of these, so this won't effect us unless a partner like sapphire tries to sell it or somethin.

Really I'm not sure how helpful this would be for oems. If they're offering a 5770, 6850/6870 on the same build then wouldn't the larger number difference just further encourage someone to buy the more expensive option? I wonder if this is just one of those things one oem started doing awhile ago and now all oems must follow suit to avoid looking like their selection is worse than the competition.

People have to understand that OEMs (Dell and HP mainly) constantly push both Ati and Nvidia to rename "old" stuff to fill a certain price point when there is no adequate replacement from the new generation...It's not always a decision of the design house. When one of your main distributors says that they won't restock untill you have something "new" to offer, you have no choice but to comply.

If you want to be mad at somebody, be mad at the OEMs

Don't forget iMacs and even towers perhaps. These GPUs are perfect for such. Though, myself, I sure wish the 27" 2560x1440 iMacs we have now at work had something a little more powerful than a 5750. At least it's got 1GB of VRAM though. My mom's 23" iMac has 256MB. :shadedshu

I don't get smth.... Prices will be the same, or 6770 will cost more than 5770?
Or 5770 will drop down and 6770 takes its place?

AMD had decided on this move several months ago (there had been 2 or 3 news concerning that topic) and I actually think they made the right decision in rebranding the 57xx-series.

By doing so the consumers will, in the end, have a full range of 6xxx-series cards to choose from, once the transistion is complete and the old stock of 5-series cards has sold out. Performance-wise the new 67-cards will match perfectly into the lineup, with the 69xx-cards at the top, the 68xx-cards at the position the 57xx-cards once held in the old lineup, and the 67xx-cards below them.

I think it would have been more confusing the have a full 6xxx-range of cards with two 57xx-cards in between, wouldn't it?

I really don't see this as a big deal. At this time, there is no way for a consumer to buy this product by itself. And places like newegg, etc are still currently selling 5700 cards. So I see no one being harmed by this at this time.

No one wins with rebrands. Terrible idea.

AMD wins because OEM companies want and buy them. The OEM boxes out there usually come with some sort of reworked budget-edition or rebrand of a retail card. Well, assuming it's one of the rare boxes with a discrete GPU lol.

Well, if AMD won't be releasing a better version of the power-efficient 5770, then I'll plump for a GTX560 then!

Whereas, if AMD had something between 5770 and a GTX560, aka real 6770, which had significant efficiencies and quietness on its side, then I would have gone for that.

For me, as powerful as possible but with the constraint: as quiet and as efficient as possible.

AMD have just dropped the "magic x770 formula". nV wins.

Meh, the rebranding will only be a issue until the next gen comes out.

You are right, but not two identical cards, two clones. It would be interesting to see some better efficiency from the 6770 and 50

Yes, a die-shrink with a better efficiency truly would have been nice, maybe even a switch to the newer vilw4-stream processors. AMD probably decided that the results are not worth the (financial) effort.

Yeah I could see Apple going for these. If Mac users cared about their GPUs, they wouldn't be buying a lot of the Mac models. Course Apple focuses on CPU more. Lot of users don't really need Xeons but it sells. Likely why Apple did away with the low cost tower. It would outsell the Xeon boxes anyday. Plus with the average lifecycle of Macs being longer than PCs, thats more customers not buying new machines. If you look at the Mini->iMac they are all 2yr machines. Last about that long then get a new one. Plus all the mad profits Apple makes with the branding...the 2yr rotation system likely earns more than selling more low end towers which people would hang onto longer and upgrade.
