Corsair, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced the availability of a USB 3.0 Upgrade Kit for their Obsidian Series 800D and 700D full-tower PC cases.

The kit is designed for Obsidian Series case owners who have upgraded their systems to support USB 3.0, either by replacing their motherboard or via an add-in card. The kit consists of a replacement front I/O panel that includes a USB 3.0 port and a wiring harness that connects to an available USB 3.0 port on the customer's motherboard or add-in card. Installation takes just minutes.

"Our Obsidian Series cases are designed and built to last through years of system builds and upgrades, and our customers are on the leading edge of technology and of USB 3.0 adoption," said Ruben Mookerjee, VP and General Manager for Components at Corsair. "We are pleased to provide an upgrade kit that allows Obsidian Series owners to bring a USB 3.0 port to the front of the case, making it easier to connect USB 3.0 devices."

The USB 3.0 Upgrade Kit for the Obsidian Series 800D and 700D is available for purchase from Corsair.com for $14.99 USD.

Not really digging this set up. Would have much preferred to see the USB 3.0 internal header instead of the wire hanging out the back and occupying one of your motherboard's existing ports.

What?

USB v3.0... but with and internal cable with type A connector? Jezzzz.... gives us an internal cable with an INTERNAL connector, to plug directly onto the internal USB v3.0 connector of some new motherboards. (or at least make the internal cable with type A USB connector an option for who needs it).

Honestly... this is why great cases don´t become almost perfect ones... manufacturers don´t seem to hire all the right people to do the job.

Also, will 800D and 700D come with this kit from the factory from now on?

Uhm, Lian-Li has offered similar upgrade kits for quite some time for most of its recent cases, so big deal...

Also, 800D has been out since before USB3 adoption, thats why it wasnt included.

This I/O is already outdated. It uses the clumsy rear plug in USB 3.0. It means an additional 2 thick 2 meter USB cables going through your case to cable manage. Why can't they use the new internal connector.

I agree on the internal connector, but with the copious amounts of space for hiding these cables, is it really an issue?

quick question, does a usb 2.0 front panel connect to usb 3 on the motherboard?

im asking because im not changing my few-months-old case for at least 2 years.

EDIT: No :p, but im sure motherboards will still have usb 2.0 pins for few years.

yeah your edit was right, they arent compatible.

hopefully we'll see boards with only USB 3.0 soon enough, so we dont need to have both standards.

I had commented on NZXT's forums that they should do the same for their cases, including/especially for the Phantom.
More case manufacturers should take a leaf out of Corsair's book in this regard, although I think the price shouldn't top US$10 and of coarse it should have the proper USB 3.0 header for plugging directly into mobo, not like these...:wtf:

This is awesome!

I wasn't looking forward to my case being out of date thanks to old connectors on the front I/O panel. I'm tempted to get this now but I may hold off until there's a version with USB3 and lightpeak/thunderbolt on as well.

Now I just need someone to show me where I can buy a USB3 header which has a female USB3 connector on the other end to I can use these on mobo risers..
