On April 5, AMD will release its newest Radeon HD 6000 series GPU, which it has been largely secretive about. The new Radeon HD 6790 is designed to compete with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 550 Ti. The HD 6790 is based on AMD's 40 nm "Barts" GPU (on which are based HD 6850 and HD 6870). The Barts silicon is configured to have 800 stream processors (SPs)...hang on, unlike the 800 SPs on Juniper (HD 5700 series, HD 6770), the 800 SPs (arranged in 10 streaming multiprocessor units) on Barts will be spread across two blocks of 400 SPs each, each block having its own dispatch processor. Also unlike Juniper, Barts LE (HD 6790) will have 32 ROPs, 40 TMUs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. The core will be clocked at a generous 840 MHz, and 1050 MHz (4.20 GHz effective) memory, churning out 134.5 GB/s memory bandwidth. The GPU is expected to have TDP of under 150W, and will draw power from two 6-pin power connectors.

according to table from source link it will use 2 x 6-pin (unfortunely)

Wow this is great news the $100-150 market for cards is the most lucrative and so far the GTX 550 Ti, while disappointing is slightly faster than the old 5770. This 6790 from these specifications should be able to give the 550 a run for its money which of course, means lower prices for us consumers!

why not name it HD 6830,it would make more sense on the architectural and performance side ????

Because they can't explain HD 6850 drawing power from one 6-pin and HD 6830 from two 6-pin.

According to NordicHardware, the release date of HD6790 has been postponed to the 5th of April. So there won't be reviews on 31 March. :(

UPDATE: We just learned that AMD has postponed the launch to the 5th of April

I wonder, if there's any chance to enable the disabled cores. :)

lol.

Just lol.

My number dyslexia is kicking in. A 6790? Too close to a 6970. Amd's naming strategy is one helluva marketing ploy. I still think 550Ti will win because it says 'Ti' which obviously makes it faster*. But the 6790 is just the same number as a 6970 so maybe it has it's genes.

6790 gives the impression of a further cut down 6780, 6770 etc.

So, this will be worse than a 6850? Or does the xx90 mean it beats the x850.

Trifle confused. So is this Turks?

Sounds like they are experimenting here? Trying a slightly different approach for the mid-range department. I can't imagine it would really have 2 6 pin connectors :O.

The TI monkier is so old that hardly anyone probably remember it.
GF2ti 3ti 4ti, then it died off.....
Had all of them actually, 3ti was crap so was 4 TI (especially, burned up by just looking at them! I had 9 of them, all of them burned up, RMA, new, burned up, new, burned up, new. my friends had the same problem)
I went to ati with bad drivers, but the card didnt even burn up after 2 years when the fan stopped! 9800pro! rma new fan, still rocking to this date in a w98 pc for legacy games:p

the TI monkier brings me just bad memories, the 2TI was a freaking god sent piece, but it all ended there for me, 4TI was hella fast but issues

Am curious how close it will get to the 460 in performance. 550 obviously didn't dethrone it. Prices haven't been budging much. Caught a lot of rebate deals on 460s tho. Hoping that means complete price drop is near. But not counting on anything atm.

AMD said 6790 would compete with 550ti (who proven to be slower than 460). looking on power design, assuming it will be faster than 5770 which proven to be on par or somewhat slower a little than 460 but still faster than 550ti. so i guess, when you say its a win. then you wrong..

just wait till it got wide releases so we can whether or not justifying the price..

and for marketing ploy, who hadn't done that? :shadedshu

Uh...didn't you read the article?

ymm.. do u really, such an experienced person, think AMD will manufacture a new GPU chip JUST for one SKU? You really think that??

HD6750 and HD6770 are already rebranded HD5750/HD5770s and there is no laptop chip with 800 Shaders based on Barts.

Which leaves us to the only logical conclusion, it's a crippled Barts. DIdnt think someone like you wouldn't take the path of logic

I thought you'd just admit that you did not read the article. But now it seems like you need to go back to kindergarten. Here's why.

1. I clearly stated in the article that it is based on Barts.

2. Your reply to the article:

You were telling me that I was wrong in thinking that HD 6790 was based on another GPU than Barts, when in fact I clearly stated that it was based on Barts. You were hallucinating.

3. I asked you to read the article again, just so you know that you didn't read the part where I clearly stated it was based on Barts.

4. You continued hallucinating that I thought HD 6790 was based on a new GPU and not Barts

5. So I asked out:

6.

Post edit history. Text in red is from the original version (the very first save) of the article. You can see that I mentioned it's based on Barts right from the start.

Seriously, either tell me where you bought that joint, or go back to KG.

Well I think this should be called a 6770 and then a 6750 the name 6790 makes me think its a slower dual card
