I understand using the lower yielding cores for this but am surprised by the fact that even with more disabled shaders it uses more power than the 6850.

tell me where you bought that joint

I second that, i want to know wtf you are smoking... and where can i get some

It's probably all the worst chips. Bottom of the bin.

That or they've just slapped it on remaining 5870 pcb since they're pin compatible.

"Well that sounds an awful lot like a true 4870 replacement, unlike 5770."

TRUE
This card should have come to replace 5770 ages ago, when 6850 & 6870 where released.
It should be like 5830 perf.

A lot of people say perf/money have increased that for me is false, i bought a hd 4870(replaced by a 4890), for U$135 in 2009 fast forward almost 2 years and for $135 you get a shitty hd5770 that performs slightly slower TWO YEARS AFTER!!....I don't care about dx11 hd5770 doesn't have the horse power for dx11.

lol.

Just lol.

My number dyslexia is kicking in. A 6790? Too close to a 6970. Amd's naming strategy is one helluva marketing ploy. I still think 550Ti will win because it says 'Ti' which obviously makes it faster*. But the 6790 is just the same number as a 6970 so maybe it has it's genes.

6790 gives the impression of a further cut down 6780, 6770 etc.

So, this will be worse than a 6850? Or does the xx90 mean it beats the x850.

Trifle confused. So is this Turks?

* sarcasm alert

no the 6790 is a lower mid-range card. the 6850 and 6870 are the higher mid-range amd offerings.

6790? With a name like that you would think its a duel GPU card like the 6990. I mean really they should bring back the (X2). These model numbers are starting to scare me.

I like the way today's low end tech can beat yesterday's high end tech. I'm thinking of the HD2900XT 1GB which I've got. And with less damned noise too. I wonder if it can beat the rather faster 8800 GTX, which I also have...

Answers on a postcard please.

On higher resolutions the 5770 is faster than the 4870 512MB.
On top of that the 5770 uses a lot less power, and also tends to overclock much better.

The new Radeon HD 6790 is designed to compete with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

The GPU is expected to have TDP of under 150W, and will draw power from two 6-pin power connectors.

Failed. The GTX 550ti which i plan to buy only draws and only requires one 6 pin. The 6790 can't compete if if draws higher watts and requires 2 6 pins.

The 550Ti is a fail in itself.
Grab a GTX 460 while you can.

Yea find me the GTX 460 galaxy green edition, than i will buy it. The gtx 550ti is a decent card. And btw when i said that the 6790 was a failed, i don't meant by performance, i am just talking about how they cant compare it to the 550ti, if the 550ti requires less. Yea the 6790 may be more powerful, but for folks like me, simple folks, i like one 6 pin better.

Yeah, after almost 2 years that's all you can come up with? seriously?, after almost TWO years one would expect at the very least 40% increase across all resolutions on average.

Faster at higher resolutions? lol, oh yeah, i'm sorry it's 12% faster at 1600p!:rockout:(not that you can play at that resolution anyway....:rolleyes:and even worst if you have a dx11 title LOL)
Power comsumption? omg it's not like you need a 800W ps for the 4870....with a $50 500W you can play flawlessly.

So, what do i think?, nv and amd do not think about the end user at all.....

Accept it man $140 spot doesn't have a true mindblowing performance card...

Think about it dude...almost 2 freaking years and i have to buy what? a fucking gtx 460 768MB for shitty 24% increase???, not enough for 2 years of wait......

I bet nv and amd will manage to create a graphic card with 28nm with 30% more perf than hd5770 and sell it for 160 bucks :banghead:

According to nordic hardware "the first specifications from AMD spoke of a relatively high power consumption, namely 150 watt.

We questioned these numbers, that directly came from the company, and additional digging have confirmed our suspicions. Whether it was a spelling error or a simple mistake we don't know, but according to the first tests Radeon HD 6790 will consume less power than Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850.

Our source did not want to mention any exact number, but the card will lay 15-20 watt lower than Radeon HD 6850 at regular gaming, which would put the card in the 110-115 watt envelope. This matches other specifications much better."

There is also some pictures of the sapphire model

Comparing current low end to past high end and not being happy with the increase makes little sense to me, remember as far as the cards worth gaming on go, the 69xx cards are high end, 68xx mid range and 67xx low end.

I find the fact that the low end cards of today beat the high end cards of past generations and use less power a great increase.

This is the cheapest 5850 i could find
One hundred eighty five dollars, plus $5 shipping.

PD: Bear i'm not comparing high end versus mid range, i'm comparing price points.

By the way a 5770 can be found for $114. So whats the point of saying a cheaper card is as fast as a 4870?
