It's not a waste of money if one plans to use it with a GPU renderer like Octane or Arion. Larger amounts of memory allow for larger scenes to be rendered.

Hmm.. The 2GB will help on sli with 3 monitors but not really all that well for high level gaming. So, buying 3 monitors = an expense, why buy a shitty card for such an experience? I'm sorry, AMD have the 3 monitor bag all sewn up.

I am pretty sure they store the scene in the main system ram, not video ram because the CPU also has to access the information. They're not rendered 100% by the GPU, more like 75% GPU and 25% CPU...

Actually the scenes are stored in both the system and the video memory, and SLI-ing 2 or 3 video boards doesn't increase the available video memory. Dont ask me why, they just do.
The CPU doesn't do much in Octane, and the gpu is used so much that the OS's UI slows down. Iray though uses both CPU and GPU.

If GPU is used THAT much, i don't think one is putting 550Ti in his scene rendering machine.

Given the memory controller design of the GTX550TI 2GB doesn't make any sense at all. Heck 1GB doesn't either but hey that's marketing for you.

You still get full speed access to the first 2/3 of the memory... :) But yeah it's hard not to agree with you - gimmick card is gimmick
