PowerColor HD 6850 SCS3 Silent Graphics Card Final Iteration Pictured

Perhaps the fastest silent graphics card in the making, PowerColor's new HD 6850 SCS3 finally taken shape, and will launch soon. The card was spotted first in November 2010, but has since undergone many little changes, particularly with its PCB and components. The card is designed to draw power from one 6-pin power connector, and run the GPU at reference speeds, while relying entirely on a massive heatsink to cool it. The heatsink uses five copper heat pipes to draw heat directly from the GPU, and through the large aluminum fin array. The HD 6850 features 960 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory over a 256-bit wide memory interface.

I assume you will need pretty decent airflow in your case for this beast, but still ... it's pretty damn neat.

by the looks of it it'll need its own separate case just so the heatsink will fit, and they could of at least made it look nice, it looks like someone's put a graphics card in a radiator :laugh:

As long as it is effective, it does not need to be fancy.
Any unnecessary parts will only serve to hinder airflow.

W.T.H. Leaving the temperature up to the ambient temperature of the case seems like a bad idea to me. I get the feeling the best way to make sure the card is sufficiently cooled is to attach a fan...destroying it's value as a silent card.

What's your case temp? Mine is around 28 C, and the card is never lower than 40...

It would be nice if passively-cooled video cards like this one came with mounting hardware for an optional fan.

That way, end-users can add a quiet/silent fan if they wanted to.

Edit: Zip-ties are okay, but they are prone transmit vibration. A bit of silicone/rubber between the heatsink and the fan would be okay though.

I like it!

This + silent sidepanel fan ( 20cm for example) would be an epic combo.

2 of these in crossfire= pure win.
