A friend of mine got a passively cooled 4870 back when they were all the rage. The next day he was returning it to the shop, because it was melting the paint off his case.

In all honesty, the 4870 was probably much more power-hungry, but passive solutions on high end stuff is just not achievable these days. I mean sure, if you live in Norway and you frequently watch the northern lights, then it's probably ok, but in the torrid cities that some of us inhabit, it's simply an extra fire hazard.

... ensures every key components to stay cool in a quite setting.

You or Powercolor's marketing dep misspelled "quiet". :)

Yes, but on previous passive models, Powercolor supplied the card with vRAM heatsinks.

Sounds like your friend didn't have enough airflow.

Other wise the heat from it would not be able to build up in one spot like that.

This would be awesome in my high airflow case. I wish I could buy just the cooler off of this thing.

Passive is awesome, as it means the cooling is overbuilt when you spend $5 extra and throw a fan on it.

Not sure how this thing will compare to it, but I ran a t-rad 2 on a 3870 a while back and with just the side panel fan going ( even at lowest setting) it still out performed the stock cooler and it matched a AC twin turbo XD ( on auto)

If the design is right passive is so win
