One of the biggest technology mergers of 2006 was between AMD and ATI, but this was very nearly not the case. According to the Inquirer, a senior source claims that AMD was inch close to acquiring NVIDA instead, before changing its decision. Apparently AMD had decided to buy one of the two graphics processor giants by late 2005, but the NVIDA deal was called off and ATI chosen instead. Why AMD chose ATI over NVIDIA is not yet 100% clear given that NVIDIA would have been a good choice considering its nForce chipsets, but the largest semiconductor takeover ever could have turned out very differently.

Ok, I totally trust theINQ on that. Cause it's the most reliable source out there.

But I guess it could be right. Not that I care as long as there is an improvement.

They won't. Intel is a lot larger, if anything Intel would suck up NV. Though that's not going to happen either. Though them working close together is likely, specially now. Then again Intel might also go in bed with PowerVR and tell NV to go screw themselves. They already use some PowerVR stuff so it wouldn't be unexpected.

That would have been pretty good too I guess. I mean, the nforce chipsets are wonders and with AMD having acquired them, it would have been even more bad ass.

Its sometimes easy to forget that Intel are already the No.1 Graphics chipset producer, albeit their product is in the Integrated Video sector. They wouldn't have been allowed to purchase either NVIDIA or ATI.

That will be a problem for me, AMD is my favorite company while nVidia is one of my least favorite (except M$). :p

AMD saw the weakness of nvidia; products were never future proof.

Thats why they went ATI. AMD decided to make the god's midrange card - X1950PRO.

Intel's GMA are pretty decent IMO, they can at least play most games to an extent. Nvidia have really lost their touch... 7800GTX was a cool thing before... *glazed eyes*... but then they get dodgy and invent the GX2...

The funny thing is that Sony is dumb enough to use outdated GPU on their PS3 :nutkick:
Never expected Sony to be smart but they are dumber then I expected. :respect:

I guess nVidia manage to get rid of their dead stock

Consoles are more efficient than PCs, they need less hardware to achieve the same result. And since older chips are cheaper it makes sense to use older hardware.
