Warner officially announces dual format HD discs

Warner home video may just have the answer buyers have been waiting for. If you have been holding out on buying a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player, because it is not yet set which will prevail - wait no more. Warner is now offering "Total Hi Def" discs, which combine the Blue-Ray and HD-DVD discs on one disc. So no matter what player you own, the movie will play in HD. First movies using the format will be released in the second half of 2007. The buyer only needs to pay the extra licensing fee for both technologies, as Warner will not charge more for the special discs themselves.

If they are still reasonably affordable I don't see why these won't succeed and catch on with more movie companies.

Oh, they'll succeed alright, and then they'll hold the copyright to it all (hence, everyone else will have to pay for WB's tech or make their own).

Not exactly. Dual format player = expensive. Dual format disk = great for the guy that already has a player, and doesn't feel like dropping another grand for a different format just so he can see his movies in HD. So basically, if you already have a player, it's nice to see dual-format disks coming out

Not really, they're gotten pretty cheap now. But if you have an Xbox 360, you can save a lot of money by buying an Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add On.

This is actually interesting and I heard about this on Rick and Bubba ::haha:: before it was on here. Funny thing is, they had to get an ok from both the BD group and the HDVDVD group for this. It works out quite well, Im just curious as to how much the licensing fees are.

they are only expensive now, like all technology that first hits the consumer market. remember when the BETA/VHS deck was out and it cost like 1000 bucks!!! :laugh:
