A certain British retailer listed the two hexa-core Sandy Bridge-E chips, Core i7-3930K and Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition. The top-end i7-3960X is priced at £850.79 (including taxes), that converts to around US $1,361. The unlocked Core i7-3930K, on the other hand, is priced at £477.59 (including taxes), that's around US $764. Earlier this month, news surfaced of a Chinese retailer listing these chips. The Chinese put the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition at the equivalent of US $1,227, and Core i7-3930K at the equivalent of US $912.

While the British store is making the Core i7-3930K at least $150 cheaper, it's still a long shot from the $583 price point that the chip is expected to occupy. On the other hand, the British store is quoting a price that's about $130 higher for the Core i7-3960X. It looks like Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition is increasingly unlikely to come with a three figure price.

It looks like a pre-release early adopter rip-off price. The price will drop about $200 once there is stock around imo.

The store will make a short term killing on the thousands of people who dont blink at spending $1000, just to get them first.

The price is decreasing for retailers, not because of an production changes or supply issues. I guess, as others have stated, that this is the inevitable shift from initial consumer wallet rape to MSRP. I'm looking forward to what insane pricing actually comes out.


What we've read for the last several months was the 3930 would be between 550 and 600 USD. I wonder how long it will take to get there. If we assume initial greediness, and a short initial supply of the chips, it looks like we'll have to wait until early 2012 before the chips have a reasonable price.

Not for a long time I would imagine, btw UK has 20% VAT and these are pre-release so don't expect the same price in USD they should be cheaper upon full release by $150-$250?? surprised no one has even mentioned that

Short answer: no.

Long answer: The high end 4 core processors are about 300 Euros, correct? The only thing out now are "budget" processors. It stands to reason that the enthusiast offerings will be more expensive. This is failing to mention the fact that the initial entry into LGA2011 is a locked quad core....

Except that we all know tech items sold in Britain are usually closer to the $1=£1 model than the actual conversion rate. These prices look pretty normal to me.
