Yeston Intros Cost-Effective Radeon HD 6790 Graphics Card

Chinese company Yeston released a new Radeon HD 6790 graphics card for gamers on a tight budget. It makes use of cost-effective cooler and PCB designs to make itself available at a price-point of 799 RMB (about $125). The familiar-looking cooler borrows its design from the likes of MSI Cyclone. It consists of a copper-plate base which makes contact with a heatsink with spirally-projecting fins and two 8 mm thick nickel-plated copper heat-pipes; these heat-pipes pass through two aluminum fin arc structures on either sides of the main heatsink. Ventilation is care of a central 80 mm fan.

The PCB uses a cost-effective 3+1 phase VRM to power the 40 nm Barts LE GPU, making use of common coil-type chokes and DPAK MOSFETs. The card is one of few HD 6790 offerings out there, that draw power form just one 6-pin PCIe power connector (most designs use two). The GPU features clock speeds of 840 MHz core and 1050 (4.20 GHz effective) memory; and is aided by 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. It packs 800 stream processors. Display outputs include two DVI, and one each of HDMI 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.2.

Yeston is one company I would kill for to have sell products in the states. Though, this is not one of those products I would kill for.

And the weak VRM is not covered by heatsink, I expect an eventual popping noise from them.

Usually those cheap ass dumbed down budget versions make horrid noises when under load or when load is fluctuating... I used to have one Club3D Radeon card that waswhining so loudly when playing Starsiege (Earthsiege 3) that it was simply unbearable. It was louder than the fan itself. This had to be the worst circuitry that i have ever seen. Or either horrifically bad coils or caps.

The original MSI VRM was not to good either. I blow one 460. Still have it laying around somewhere, too lazy to RMA.

What so big about this... I snatched up a PowerColor 6790 with a desent H-P cooler and one 6-pin for $90 -AR $30 w/FS back in Oct. Bumped it from 840Mhz/1050MHz, up to 890/1125 with no issues.

Good stuff. Those cards can already be found for $125 AND come with a free game while not using a more inexpensive power delivery system.

They needed to come down to $110 or less IMO.

I'm a fan of the MSI Cyclone design for mid-grade cards, but this is just garbage. I feel sorry for anyone who buys this card, or any Barts LE GPU in general. Half the ROPs means it could never hope to catch up with HD 6850 in pixel fill-rate, no matter what the overclock (and you shouldn't with that PCB anyway). At the end of the day, the HD 6790 is nothing more than an HD 5770 with a 256-bit memory bus that consumes a shit load more power and costs more.
