A RAM disk has preallocated memory that nothing else can use, and an entire filesystem inside it (journal and everything). Whereas a cache can be overwritten, has just the data of each file, and the OS keeps tabs on where it is in memory (should a program need that memory, it will give it the address and remove the entry from it's Big List O' Files In Memory).
