Touchscreen display developer Senseg revealed prototypes of its haptic touchscreen displays. Simply put, these are displays that can reproduce the texture and "feel" of surfaces, apart from reproducing moving images. For example, it can reproduce the texture and feel of silk and rock. Senseg is calling its display "Feel Screen". The Feel Screen is already backed by a 4D display technology, in which images consist of "tixels" (pixel with touch-texture information). We've all probably been to 4D movies, in which apart from 3D visuals, a fourth dimension (usually physical effects). Think of compact haptic displays as being similar, only here the fourth dimension is touch texture.

How does it work? Feel Screen, like every touchscreen, could be a layered display at its lowermost layer is the LCD that displays visuals (capable of even stereo 3D), above that is a touchscreen layer, and above that, a haptic layer that generates mild electrostatic fields. Touch-textures are created by making and manipulating an attractive force between the finger and that electrostatic field. The screen can reproduce surface textures and create the sensation of vibrations. Sounds too Sci-Fi? Well, Senseg stated that it will be able to mass produce displays based on this technology in 2012, which will then market by 2013. Senseg owns all patents related to this unique technology. Some of the most valuable ones could be related to how Senseg went about designing its electrostatic haptic layer to prevent it from interfering with the capacitive touchscreen layer. Please don't evaporate.

The second image clearly shows haptic and touch input working together. How did they do it?

As much as I want Samsung to fail hard: my 40" Samsung LNS4041D broke down before the battery on the remote are empty.
Edit 2: Seem like failed capacitor(s) are at fault. And there are lots of people with this kind of problem with their Samsung TV sets.

There's a small typo on the title of this article. Senseng---> Samsung.

Edit: hummm thought the touch screen supplier was Samsung. sorry about that

It sounds like such an awesome tech but so many silly/random thoughts come to mind, would it be safe to lick the screen? would it shock your tongue or would it feel normal?

One thing that i'm curious about is texture depth and behaviour, if it could give a large enough depth i wonder if it could be programmed to feel like pressing a button, as in using it in combination with an on screen keyboard and it feel like using a real one... i admit i am probably thinking way past it's ability but surly if early versions could not do things like that then maybe with time the tech would get more advanced to the point where it is possible.

Hmm is this a step towards virtual reality as in with much advancement of electrostatic fields it would be possible to project what feel like objects and use in combination with hologram projection to create visible objects that can be touched?.

As much as everyone contributed to the laugh with pr0n ideas, i see it as a different application. Touch screens for blind ppl. Braille text displayed through touch sensitive screen that can deliver physical touch sensation to the finger. Pretty cool eh? Something blind users could not use at all at the moment.

Now that would be a very sweet idea.:rockout:

Lets just hope it can't reproduce the feeling of a knife:rolleyes:

I love how all the companies add there 4th dimension tech,It's already taken by time[temporal].Times the 4th dimension, you can't just change it for marketing:mad:
In ten years will all be wondering how we got finger cancer:rolleyes:

The first thing I thought of was computing for the blind. Many moons ago when I was working in a call center as tech support I once had a blind guy call up who's OS wasn't booting. Would be awesome if this thing could emulate brail or something similar.

Did you manage to talk them through it?

That must of been amazingly difficult

I tried for about 15 minutes to initiate the automatic recovery, but was unsuccessful. We couldn't even be sure what the problem was. For all I knew the HDD may not have been detected. In the end he had someone with the gift of sight help him out. Can't remember what the issue was though. Got me thinking about what he would do if he didn't have anyone to help him.

The screen can reproduce surface textures and create the sensation of vibrations.
If this was capable of something as refine as brail or even a button they would be pushing that as the selling point. It seems to me to be limited to a few degrees of textures and only one at a time, which is still very impressive.
This looks like a sale pitch for the patent so hopefully someone with deep pockets will take this to the next level where it can help people.
