AMD Tahiti (Radeon HD 7900) Graphics Card Seen in the Nude

Today may be a Fringe-less Friday but worry not, there are plenty of thing to do like contemplating the two recently-leaked images of an AMD Tahiti-powered graphics card. Tahiti is a 'next-gen' GPU built on TSMC's 28 nm process that's supposed to be at the heart of the Radeon HD 7900 series models (the HD 7950, HD 7970, and then probably the dual-GPU HD 7990).

The card seen below comes with one Tahiti chip protected by a heatspreader/shield (only the die is exposed) and has a red PCB, a 5+1-phase PWM, two BIOSes, two PCIe power plugs, CrossFire connectors enabling quad-GPU configurations, and 12 memory chips which support previous reports of a 384-bit memory interface.

The Radeon HD 7900 series cards are rumored to debut in January at CES 2012 (January 10-13) so we still have one month of leaks to look forward to. Oh, and the winter holidays.

I like that shield, should reduce my worrying about knocking of components by a fair margin, and ensure over tightening doesn't result in an exploded chip!

( I've done it and don't recommend it)

That core support bracket looks killer. Memory nearly 100% around the outside of the chip is neat too. I hope it really does need that bandwidth, because then it's gotta be a killer performance-wise.

There is a crucial difference from the previous leak - this sample consists of 2 x 6-pin PCI-e connectors, as opposed to the 8-pin + 6-pin configuration previously captured. This could suggest that this is either an advanced production ready sample, or Tahiti Pro, or HD 7950, which should feature a lower TDP than Tahiti XT / HD 7970. This card thus has a TDP somewhere between 150W and 225W.

interesting!

The heatspreader/shield is a good idea, stop nubs cracking the die.

I doubt it will be compatible with full cover blocks, but GPU only + stock cooling plate is fine too IMO.

( Not as If modern day gpus get a whole lot of extra grunt from over-clocking memory)

I'd of gone with a 6 on the front 6 on the back ram set up if I were designing this card ( not that I know about designing cards from an electronics perspective)

And then used a slightly larger cross bracket on the back ( just a square basically) to both help support the gpu and cool down the chips.

Although I supposed from a manufacturers perspective it's cheaper doing it their way.

I'd just prefer it aesthetically lol

Are you guys sure this is the 7950 and labeled as Tahiti ???
Surely the 7950~7990 should be Trinity, is the one/s to have the XDR2.

I can not see that AMD would make dual gpu 79?? in 3 models Devastator lite / desktop / scrapper desktop.
If scrapper is dual gpu sure then trinity lite/desktop is likely 7950/7970 and this tahiti is the 7930 or 7850 ????

I wonder what the gold finders are for on the opposite side of the card? The same side as the PCIe connector.

The crossfire fingers?

Unless you mean the very small ones, that's just where they've snapped the card of it's mold.

Ah yeah I see the gap now (obscured by that white blob). I thought it was one long group of fingers.

interesting, 384-bit confirmed and lower power consumption. I like the trend of more gpu power for less psu power. Hopefully we'll have components in a few years that can once again run the highest end hardware on a 500w psu. (note the est in highest, I'm not just talking about a core i5 paired with a 6950 type level)

Awesome, I'm so glad I didn't upgrade to a 6970. Skyrim is going to LOVE using a 7950 :D

But who is it that confirmed that the card is going to support a 384-bit bus? I'm a little bit of a noob when it comes to looking at bare cards and deciphering the electronics of it all. Confirmation from AMD themselves would solidify this info vs. a VR-Zone article.

The picture of the actual card having 12 memory chips solidifys the fact that there is a 384bit bus.

hmmm, the card looks like its not very long either :) looks about the same length as my 5850's if not a little shorter. This is a win, and looks sexy nekkid to boot!. Hope she's one of those feisty kinda red heads haha. Certainly looks like she'll pack a punch ;)

it's going to be quite cool (judging only by the die size). it's kinda smallish compared to today's gpu's.

I don't know how big the 6970s are etc but it looks to be about 50% bigger than my 6870.
