Hitachi Announces the 4 TB Deskstar HDD and 4 TB Touro Desk External Drive

Hitachi Global Storage System has now taken the veil off not one but two 4 TB storage solutions, the Deskstar 5K4000 3.5-inch hard drive which we mentioned on Friday, and a 4 TB Touro Desk external drive. The 4 TB Deskstar HDD features a 3.5-inch form factor, a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface, 32 MB of buffer, it utilizes the CoolSpin technology (~ 5900 RPM) and is currently shipping in limited quantities in both OEM and retail versions. The retail package, which includes the drive, mounting screws, and install instructions, costs $399.99.

The 4 TB Touro Desk is equipped with one Deskstar 5K4000, has a black, textured body, a USB 3.0 interface, and offers 3 GB of cloud storage for free from HitachiBackup.com. This drive will ship in January and will cost $419.99.

why should it be a joke?

top of the line hdds have always been in that price range...even before the current situation.
taking the current situation into account makes them really cheap actually...100 bucks per GB seems fine...

im in the uk, and after tax and after the seller adds there bit, we are looking at over £300 for a harddrive and its not even SSD. its hard enough to build systems for customers these days with every company trying to find a reason to charge unbelieveable prices for stock. we even had reports that the supply chains are 90% back to normal but prices have not budged and no sign of change in the near furture.

i hope you mean 100 per TB. hopefully it'll be around 75-80 per TB a couple months or so after release.

yes 300 quid seems a lot for an hdd...

but, as i said, hdds that introduced higher-than-previously-available capacities have been in that price region even before the thailand incident... so nothing has changed here... the only difference is that before the incident, new hdds took the spot of the largest drives and pushed prices down for the smaller ones... (when 3TB drives were new, they had the same price tag)...

it just like with all top of the line hardware...the newest and fastest cpu or gpu always involves a price premium just because it's the newest and fastest...
why should it be any different in storage?

ps: i'm in germany and the 7200 rpm variant of that drive costs €499... actually you guys in the uk have to pay the the lowest prices in europe (after poland)...to stay with that example: that 4TB drive with 7200rpm costs 227 - 244 € (including 20% vat) in uk...

edit: this is about 194 - 208 gbp (yes, i had the wrong currency written there previously...)


so don't tell ME that hdds are expensive...

It has a 7200 RPM Barracuda XT drive inside, versus a 5900 RPM drive from Hitachi. If you need an internal drive, just take it out of the case and install it inside your computer; you get a freebie USB 3.0 external drive case in the bargain.

That is still exepensive but this hitachi is friggin expensive and slow.
