Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 crossed the $1 billion mark in sales since its launch on November 8, 2011, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information. Highlighting the trend of interactive entertainment gaining a greater hold of audiences worldwide, the game achieved this milestone in just 16 days, eclipsing the record set in 2009 by the feature film "Avatar," which reached the $1 billion milestone in 17 days.

While 2011 box office revenue is on the decline - down 4 percent this year at $9.4 billion, compared with $9.8 billion in 2010 -- the number of people purchasing and participating in gaming is on the rise, with no sign of slowing.(1) With more than 30 million gamers, the Call of Duty community now exceeds the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.

"Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world" said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences.

Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like "Star Wars", "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings" and the National Football League (NFL) that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.

Our Call of Duty Elite is one of the fastest growing online services ever with more than six million players registered since its launch November 8, 2011 and over one million premium subscriptions sold to date. By comparison, the premium subscription services of Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM and Xbox LIVE, did not reach one million paid subscribers until almost one year after launch.

"Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre. Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "And while the franchise continues to set records, our fans still seem to want more, demonstrated by our record setting start on Call of Duty Elite. We are committed to helping everyone connect, compete and improve their game, Call of Duty style."

Not really Qubit; just goes to show how people will buy into anything without review. Mindless drones that make the whole gaming industry suffer. If I recall listening to the escapist review haha :p

Due to the price reduction of Skyrim, it knocked MW3 out of the #1 slot in the UK this week.

These "arrow to the knee" references are driving me potty, as I don't quite get them. <hissy fit> Dammit, I'm gonna have to get Skyrim to figure this one out...

That'll be me then. :) Check this out: I loved CoD4 and bought MW2 when it came out. Still haven't got round to playing it. MW3 comes out, I buy that, because it continues the story and I like the MW series. Of course, I can't play it until I've played MW2 first, which I still haven't got round to...

would have been 2bil without all them dam PC loving pirates:laugh:

You don't know what you're talking about man!! It would have been 4bn, obviously.

Tell you what though: global recession or no global recession, it doesn't stop people spending money, does it?

this epic success mw3 made only goes to show how bloody retarded the "gaming" population is.

i find it funny how today everybody knows what skyrim is yet very few people knew what oblivion is when i first mentioned it to them.

I am not a fan but see what people would like in them but to me being a old time gamer there really short and 1/2 the time you are not actually playing lol.

I really don't think their worth the $60 marker as only games like Skyrim deserve that.. But people like movies and putting that in games makes sales and i like that more than watching a film just that like i said though there short games and repeated over and over.

There won't be any "wars" if MW3 isn't much of an "opponent" to begin with.

They need to improve the shoddy graphics in the cod series, they all look the same, never pushing any boundaries, makes for one hell of a boring game to look at. Not to mention the hideously linear gameplay. I agree that cod2 and mw1 were the best of the cod series, just wish theyd give the game battlefield 3 graphics, at least!

after playing MW3 for awhile now I can definitely say that MW2 was better. most of the maps are designed around close quarter combat. I am getting way too many disconnects from the server too

I can't tell if you're being funny or not. Justin Beiber is a boy.

But the analogy you use is very correct. Highest sales make it the most bought game, nothing else. As for reviews:

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3

It gets 80% from gaming sites (across 22 reviews). BF3 gets 89% (across 59 site reviews)

We could equate MW3 to the best of gaming 'pop culture' whereas BF3 is a bit more well, sophisticated.

That's where you're wrong. MW3 is pushing outdated hardware (by 4 years now) to their limits.

And I knew someone who compared MW2 to MW3. Played in the same system, but MW3 have worse framerates...and also looks slightly worse than its predecessor too.

I can't tell if you're being funny or not. Justin Beiber is a boy.

Justin Beiber (sic) is a girl. Selena Gomez is a lesbian. They're the #1 most famous lesbian couple ever, they beat Ellen something something and her girlfriend who I don't really know in a poll in the internets.
