Does your original have the raised section of copper on the base of the cooler as this one does? From what I remember the old AC's were flat across the base, looks to me like the 7970 has a thinner IHS and there was compensation to make it there

You're right.. and it makes me sad. I will make it work with a shim if I have to... or hopefully AC comes out with a kit for the Xtreme Plus II.

Shim should suffice. I mean essentially that's what they are doing, plus if there is a power plug or "port" issue, I know you own a Dremmel

I LOVE Arctic Cooling. I've had 2 products from them over the years. My third is on its way as we speak. It's an Accelero L2 pro for my 9800gt. Honestly, for the price you can't really get anything better. The coolers come with pre-applied with thermal paste, there are individual memory heatsinks that stick to the memory modules. They are WHISPER quiet and drop temps by at LEAST 10-15C. Best cooler company in my eyes.

I recall reading about some people with an Arctic Cooling solution ranting about high VRM temps that's it, memory is a non-issue as it doesn't generate that much heat.
Besides don't you have to apply them with some sort of thermal glue to have them in place? It would be hard to remove them afterwards.

The thermal glue was replaced, and yes all the power is cooled with individual chips much like what is used for the ram chips. This is something that generated higher temps than other aftermarket coolers sure, but is still better than stock (as tested on my GTX 470)

The "thermal glue" is pre-applied on the mini heat sinks for the VRM and memory chips.
