Samsung Preparing a 27-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) Monitor

Next week at CES 2012, Samsung Electronics will show off for the first time its new Series 9 premium monitor, a slim and sexy widescreen called S27A970 which features a 27-inch PLS (Plane Line Switching) panel capable of a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Samsung's creation also has an anti-glare edge-to-edge glass display, an aluminum stand and base, a response time of 5 ms, 178/178 degree viewing angles, a static contrast ratio of 1,000:1, a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2, two 7 W built-in speakers, a 2-port USB 2.0 hub, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort inputs, plus a Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) enabling connectivity with MHL-supporting smartphones and tablets.

The Series 9 S27A970 is expected to become available in March priced at $1,200.

I laughed at the whole concept of speakers on a monitor. XD

The new Super PLS technology will feature similar performance characteristics to IPS matrices, with very wide viewing angles and fast response times. Black point and contrast ratio has always been a strong point of S-PVA panels, and so the Super PLS panels (like IPS) will actually be a little behind in this regard. Samsung claim that Super PLS outputs 10% higher brightness and has even wider viewing angles than IPS panels. They also state that they are 15% cheaper to produce which should help drive down retail costs for the end-products.

yup. i find a seperate sound source for communication works a lot better.

Well, I guess I overlooked that kind of use for them, but as an avid music listener (and musician) I am very picky on where I listen to it and I'd never suggest monitor speakers for music listening.
Still monitor speakers come in handy for what you do

On a side note, if the panel ought to be cheaper with the manufacturing process of PLS, why on earth it costs more than the u2711? That docking functionality can't ramp up the price this much

I hate how Samsung integrates the display ports into the base. This prevents the user from using wall mounts and things like that.

why DP?, well its based on the same technology PCI Express is based on (8b/10b), and not some 13 year old technology (HDMI is based on DVI thats was created in 1999) and has alot more bandwidth and is royalty-free and open

He wasn't questioning why they used Display Port, but rather why Samsung is putting all the ports in the base of the monitor. It can't be wall mounted like that.

Looks are more important than functionality. Remember you wouldn't want to see unsightly cables.

HDMI has much higher resolution. 1920x1200 for earlier versions 1.1+1.2. And I believe 2560x1600 for 1.3+1.4. 1.4 supports 3D 120hz at 1920x1080.

Well if we talk about looks vs functionality I'd rather not have shifted to LCDs from CRTs but the market is all like "NOOO WAT WUT CRTs are WAY too ugly cannot unsee let's dump them I want my slim monitor"

Looks and specs are great for the most part, but...
Where the fudge cake is my 120Hz? C'mon Samsung.
There has got to be someone who can break the barrier of 120Hz on QHD.
For that price, I'd expect 120Hz. So I'll be saving myself the big bucks and maybe, just maybe my dream monitor will be shown in CES 2013.
