Originally slated for 9th January, and reportedly delayed to February, AMD's second high-end graphics card based on the Tahiti silicon, the Radeon HD 7950 will make it for a late-January launch, sources within add-in board (AIB) partners told DigiTimes. Previous reports mentioned that Radeon HD 7950, when it is launched, will be accompanied with market-availability. In related news, while all Radeon HD 7000M mobile GPUs launched by AMD so far are rebrands from previous generations, it does have designs of 28 nm mobile GPUs based on its new Graphics CoreNext (GCN) architecture in the pipeline, which will take up Radeon HD 7900M/7800M/7700M series, which will be launched in Q2, 2012.

Good News

I am glad the slightly cheaper cards are coming out soon but i think the only real price drops will happen when Kepler is released.

On Kepler, knowing nVidia, i personally think if they had something really amazing then they would either paper launch now or 'leak' benchmarks as to make people think twice about spending their graphics budget on 7970's.

I think either nVidia are having massive issues with production or just don't have anythink to compete with.

Time will tell and i am awaiting for IB platform before i upgrade anyway and only buy based on the best bang per buck card or cards. Probably be 2 x 560ti as they are super cheap now and in SLi offer great performance.

All of this graphics power will be pointless unless MS and Sony don't pull their finger out and release the Xbox1080 and PS4 as we need new games to push these cards. I'm still hoping that they will get announced at E3, released just in time for Christmas and that GTA5 is written for them but i think that is very wishful thinking!

I'm staying with my 45 nm CPU and 55nm CPU until they release new consoles. Moore can kiss my ar$e.

I have the same feeling, but I'm hoping for competition so the prices drop!

1. Release 7970
2. Kepler???
3. Profit!

I hope Kepler comes out and it's neck in neck with AMD's offerings so we can get a price war up in this mofo.

My reading and understanding as of late on Kepler is that they will release a card that's probably considered to compete with 7950 (or might be lower performnce and be priced less) before the high end. Fudzilla said "We managed to ask Jen Hsun Huang, Nvidia CEO, a single question. We asked, where is Kepler? The answer we got was that we have to be "patient" about it."
Take that with a grain of salt.

Now they and others report "Nvidia’s Kepler high end card, which should up with the Geforce GT 680 brand comes in April." I still think Nvidia will need to get into a $400 price point quicker, I don't see how they can hold out till like May they will be running again to gain ground.

I don't see any price war as long as TSMC is not able to make enough high end chip and their costs for that are contacted/absorbed by either. Until say G-F can bring strong production there's no one in that triangle thinking about slashing their wrist.

That was cool of AMD to leave software locked 6950s :D
It surely helped em to sell more pieces, atleast I think.

Not so sure about that. I don't see how allowing it benefits AMD at all.

It's this or lose sales to nVidia =S

Not so sure about that. I don't see how allowing it benefits AMD at all.

Pinches a few sales from nVidia in the lower tiers of cards while not having to guarantee the extra performance (good way of getting rid of otherwise poorly over-clocking chips originally slated for the upper performance tiers and at the same time divert money from nVidia). That and the extra chatter/advertising AMD get from it

Sure you risk loses of some 7970 sales but OTOH any sale that's not an nVidia one is a good sale in the eyes of AMD (maybe the reward is worth the risk to them, like how shops will use loss-leading sales to generate foot traffic in stores).
