AMD Still Growing in the Desktop Market

During 2006, AMD's market share continued to grow with regards to home computing, however Intel began to reclaim the server market towards the end. At the end of 2005 AMD was reported to have a market share of 21.4% for chip shipments, however during Q4 2006 the company accounted for 25.3%, the highest it has ever seen. Meanwhile, Intel started the year on 76% and fell to 74.4%. Despite 2006 also being a successful year for AMD in the server market, during Q4 its market share fell to 22.2%, down from 23.6% during Q3. In desktops alone AMD now ships 29.1% of chips and 19.4% of notebook chips.

the turion x2 isn't exactly a budget chip though. while AMD does need a performance notebook cpu, isn't it true that budget systems are the ones that sell more? maybe I'm just assuming the general public just shops for price.

I agree, the budget market is where AMD is shining right now. The deal with Dell probably isn't hurting either.

I have used only AMD, being able to run games that required WAY over what i had for CPU alone. I'm not bashing Intel, but I have seen the power of AMD and won't be leaving them any time soon

They both serve their purpose. Im an AMD fan boy and will be until the day I Die. I couldnt stand anything intel and pentium (my first computer had the intel inside on a 486DX2 66mhz). Thing was great, for awhile (replaced that with a cyrix chip, dont ask how, it just fit). I got another that had an intel pentium in it, the thing sucked. No matter what I Did. I went AMD with my Gateway and I havent looked back. AMD still offers a great bang for the buck. All intel did was latch on to AMD's route, and took off with it. After 3 years of getting spanked, Intel finally learned. Now, if they ever go the HT route, they will be bad axe. Until then, AMD is still awesome.

AMD semprons still beat the celerons in all ways so the low end market is pro AMD while intel gets the highend market for now with the C2D but K8L im sure will reclaim some ground lost to Intel

oh and they have not stopped selling low end stuff in fact 754 appears to have outlived 939 and still has semprons being put out for them not to mention that all the turion DDR1 models work on standard 754 boards including certain X2 models

I can understand why people still buy AMD. Their CPUs arent bad enough in comparison to the Core 2 Duos, for AMD fans to switch sides. And its not like the CPU has too much to say in today's games, since it's the graphics card that is the only beneficial factor.

I can't understand why anyone would be brand loyal. AMD or Intel, ATI(AMD) or NVidia I don't care. Give me the best performance I can get for my money and I will go with that company. Paying more money for less performance simply because you want to be loyal to a company is flat out stupid.

So true. Still I think my Venice 3000+ does everything that is necessary (though I don't believe in 8800's and dx10 in general as already necessary, so...) so I'll skip this and wait for another best bang

Faster GPU's need faster CPU's to keep up, it's a fact. Core2's show a pretty significant bump in framerates with similarly clocked X2's / Opterons

its not that significant in fact the test run on FX62 vs the c2d line up was a 1-5fps difference in tests

BTW when will someone run the FX74 vs the c2d lineup?
