While it may not be as high profile as the Windows 8/ARM pair, Android/ x86 is still a match with potential. It certainly has a long way to go but progress is being made, and proof of that progress was seen at CES 2012 where AMD showcased a MSI WindPad 110W tablet running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

The WindPad 110W packed a Z-01 APU (two x86 cores @ 1.0 GHz, Radeon HD 6250 graphics), 2 GB of RAM, and was available for some hands-on time, unlike the Tegra 3-powered Windows 8 tablet also seen at CES. Things weren't perfect with the 110W/Android 4.0 mix as the tablet did experience occasional freezes but keep in mind it's all a work in progress. People interested in converting their WindPad 110W from a Windows device to an (experimental) Android tablet can download the Android 4.0 for Brazos ISO via this page.

This is good news. We need multiple OSes running across multiple platforms. And platforms that we can choose the OS we want. That way everyone gets a fair shot.

Are you listening M$??? Of course not.

EDIT: oooo 900 posts. I'm gunning for the record of slowest user to 1,000. Cripes it actually seems like a lot longer than 5 years I've been hanging around here.

i'd actually like an android based OS for my laptop as a secondary OS for HTPC use, *if* it can lower power consumption due to less resources used.

Actually Microsoft could do something similar as Apple and only allow their OS to be installed on specific hardware. Said hardware may also disallow the install of other OSes. Presumably Windows 8 ARM hardware may approach this.

This doesn’t quite seem likely to me. Why would less power be used when the hardware is the same?

Less resources can potentially lead to less cpu cycles which in turn less heat & power used.

Less recourses in terms of what?

I’m sure if you dim the screen, turn off cores, throttle the CPU and so on,…..you’ll save some. If you are referring to the OS itself it likely hasn’t been optimized very well for x86 hardware yet (or the other way around). In any event I don’t expect Android on x86 to achieve ARM hardware power usage.

if it uses less CPU, ram and hard drive while maintaining the same low power states... it'll use less power. thats how these mobile OS's work usually. (hence, apples weird/non existent multi tasking)
