Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 first quarter which spanned 14 weeks and ended December 31, 2011. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $26.74 billion and net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 44.7 percent compared to 38.5 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter's revenue.

The Company sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 128 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 15.43 million iPads during the quarter, a 111 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 5.2 million Macs during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 15.4 million iPods, a 21 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

"We're thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Apple's momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline."

"We are very happy to have generated over $17.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2012, which will span 13 weeks, we expect revenue of about $32.5 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $8.50."

Well, the collapse of Steve Jobs's reality distortion field doesn't seem to have done them any harm, at least in the short term.

Will Apple actually be better off without him? Time will tell.

LOL... I'm surprised you didn't write this! Don't forget he died in Q4. Suspect the numbers are inflated, but only time will tell.

Yea here in the middle high class parts of town in Montreal, it is an epidemic, just like the 500~600$ winter coats "Canada Goose". Sure they are nice and winters can be tough, but my 95$ winter jacket does the job. But when you see these jackets in October at 10C and up until May, there's a problem. You realize just how many douches there are that show off. Some kids save up all their money for their Mac Book Pro and Canada Goose Jacket but then can't afford 1500$ per semester for full time university

I think so far total accumilation is ~ 3" - 4", IF that  When i was a kid we used to make snow fort's and play hockey on pond's and toss snowball's at pig's! Where's the fun now? I miss my Canadian winter

You know you just aint "cool" if ya don't keep up with the joneses', follow the leader everyone and don't forget the complimentary koolaid ;)

Sarcasm?

Apple makes products people want. Maybe not you, but there are plenty of others that do. The numbers don't lie.

These numbers are because people buy Macs/iPhones because they are popular and cool and they have a certain prestige attached to them.

Apple makes product people want even though they do not need.

These specific people will place themselves out of pocket for a product which has the coolest image by the unwitting public.

I believe these numbers are indeed accurate and if apple take the concept of Steve then the legacy of Steve Jobs with Apple will continue to carry on for a long time.

It was because of Steve Jobs that Apple became fashionably cool regardless of whether it was over priced or not as functional as something much cheaper.

I know a number of females who have PC laptops who slapped an Apple sticker over the laptops logo in a feeble attempt to emulate the image of having a Macbook.

I think apple managed to appeal to the narcissistic folks, which unfortunately... is the ruling majority.

Facebook gives testament to that.

People only need food, water and shelter. Clothing helps keep us warm, but anything else is what people want.

Funny how people take it so literally when someone talks about Apple product in such a manner.
I'm talking about iPhones in comparison to a typical android based phone which does the same thing for a lot less.

Unlike paying more for a component because it actually performs better.

My Galaxy Gio is a typical Android phone. Are you saying it's as fast as the iPhone? And the high end Android devices are as much or more than the iPhones over here.

They make good products too. I have yet to come across a better ultrabook than MacBook Air, I have yet to use a smoother phone than iPhone 4S (even SGSII, the most popular one after 4S fails), and I have not played with a better tablet than iPad 2. Sure, the iEnvironment might not be the best, but the end user experience is almost unparalleled.

Apple make premium products using premium materials. Their systems still look and feel pristine way after their tech innards have been evolutionary surpassed. Macs and iphones/pods/pads have long lasting face value. Can you say the same about a cheap plastic PoS Dell or HP? I don't think so...

I find my Google Nexus (PentaBand and unlocked and ICS just makes it so much better for me), and I've seen so many people have problems with their macs and iPhone 4 (4S not so much but it is still new). IMO there are ultrabooks out their now that suit me better than a MBA, and I prefer the Transformer Prime or Galaxy Tab to the iPad 2. I actually really don't like the iPad except for its form factor.

You cannot deny that the majority of their market is because of the marketing and the false thinking Macs never have problems. I also like how Mac users try to never admit their mac has a problem, but for a TINY thing, they'll say PCs are garbage and Macs are problem-free.

I never said that they have problems, I just said that the end user experience is far superior than most competitors (for most users, seeing that you are so dead set against Apple). I have rarely come across people saying that they buy mac because they are problem free, they are fashionable etc, most of my friends who buy Apple either go for the good end user experience or the superior product. We (as a group of friends) recommended one to get the iPhone 4S because we know that he will not be bothered to rearrange the innards of the phone, and then recommended the iPad 2 to another because the form factor is best for his parents (and Asus Transformer was not out yet and he have to fly back within a few days). After playing with the UX31, supposedly the best ultrabook out there, everyone was so unimpressed even the Mac hater grudgingly recommended the MBA11" over the UX31 based on the price we can get for both.

My only mac product, the old iPod 80Gb classic has served me faithfully for over 4 years and it is still going strong. Sure it crashes every now and then, and the battery life is not as good as before, but I have come to appreciate their build quality. Its not the best, but its a good cut above the average competitor, where build quality can be questionable even among "trusted brands" (HP and Dell, both of you can go to hell).

Edit: Oh, and Apple has been so good over the past few years with popularising novelties that they have effectively turned the entire tech community into their marketing machine, eagerly waiting for the next toy to be popularised and then pretending to be uninterested while waiting for some other "good" companies (like Google or Asus) to make a direct competitor.

The UX31 has good specs but the build quality isn't that great... I prefer by far the Lenovo. While the iPad 2 is nice, but I can't justify 519 CAD $ when the Galaxy Tab is 399C$ and I prefer it. Compared to the Galaxy Nexus, I find the iPhone 4S to pale in comparison. For some reason I don't like my sister's SGSII 4.5", but the GN is just simply amazing.

Yea Apple is ahead of the curve, for example with the first with MBA type computer by far, and the first to have a decent resolution on a cell phone. They are above the average, but not above MY average. I can understand some of the appeal, but BY FAR the majority of the purchases is because of the perception it is simply and "problem-free" and "à la mode" . When you see those line ups and you talk to people, they thing the iPhone 4S is the fastest and has the best screen and is awesome because it's cool. Actually most think anything Apple is the best screen and the simplest. I know that in both Montreal and Toronto, the Middle Class and up buy Apple products for all the wrong reasons including the simple fact that it is "à la mode" and the majority buyers of anything like like that really. If you don't appeal to that crowd then you won't be as successful.

Yes some people do buy the for the right reasons and I respect that, but it is a TINY minority

Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.

It isn't a problem says a coworker, right after he says "My I phone 4S is better than your unlocked Galaxy S II, but can you share you internet with me so I can check some stuff on my macbook?"

While I surf the web on my shared connection.
