Maybe the Xeon E5-2687W is the unlocked Xeon. W is for Workstation and it also has a bigger TDP of 150W instead of the 135W of the 2690. Also if you go to the supported CPU list of the SR-X the 2687W is not there, I wonder why.

Code:
CPU Compatibility List

    C606 Series Motherboards (Dual-QPI LGA 2011)
        Sandy Bridge EP
            Xeon E5 2690 - 2.90 GHz
            Xeon E5 2680 - 2.70 GHz
            Xeon E5 2670 - 2.60 GHz
            Xeon E5 2660 - 2.20 GHz
            Xeon E5 2650 - 2.00 GHz
            Xeon E5 2640 - 2.50 GHz

pointless.... the xeon chips this board requires have locked multi and bclk strap. little to no OC potential.

i like asus' board better.... despite the blue theme. asus should do a ROG dual 2011 and dual 1366 board. westmere is still quite viable and sought after

Maybe the Xeon E5-2687W is the unlocked and overclockable Xeon. It has higher TDP than the rest of the crowd, it has the W that stands for Workstation and it doesn't appear on the SR-X CPU support list:
Code:
C606 Series Motherboards (Dual-QPI LGA 2011)

    Sandy Bridge EP
        Xeon E5 2690 - 2.90 GHz
        Xeon E5 2680 - 2.70 GHz
        Xeon E5 2670 - 2.60 GHz
        Xeon E5 2660 - 2.20 GHz
        Xeon E5 2650 - 2.00 GHz
        Xeon E5 2640 - 2.50 GHz
        Xeon E5 2630 - 2.30 GHz

Same here, I think the Asus board will be better, however I was hoping that blue was just for the Demo Model .. cause its not pretty. But the Asus, can use ATI/AMD cards ... that alone makes is BETTER.. ( J/K fanboys ).

I really cant say either way, 1) i will never own one of either. 2) never used any of EVGAs anythings.

But I will say this looks nice & looks like it will put a hurting on 3dmark 11

No CFX on the SR-X?

CrossfireX doesn't need any fancy bridge like NF200, if the board has proper spacing and 4 slots you can do it :)
Atleast this is my experience.

The lack of dual quad channel for 1 socket is a big detraction IMO.

The color scheme, if you're into black/red.

Asus has black/blue, and for good ol' green there's Tyan and Supermicro.

What the hell is up with only using the PCI-E lanes from one CPU? They could have done away with the PLX switch and four channel switches by utilizing both processors' lanes. 40 from one for PEG, 36 from the other for PEG and for the dedicated SAS link. (and with 4 lanes to spare) If I remember right, there's two 8GB/s QPI links between the two processors, so what's up with the switch? Did they do it so you can use a single processor? I really don't get it.

MY POINT EXACTLY!

me you and bog are the only ones who get it.

they made this board hoping that intel would allow some form of OCing but they didnt... so evga is fucked on selling this thing unless a miracle happens.

it costs 3x what a typical mobo does and the cpus will cost you $5000+... AND you still need a 1000watt+ psu that adds another $300.

its like buying a Ferrari that can only go 55mph.

I wouldn't put it past Intel to make an unlocked Xeon. The Asus Z9PE-D8 WS has multiplier support up to 57x. Methinks they know something we don't.

they have NEVER in the history of time made an unlocked xeon.

intel sells over 5 million xeons a year and you know how many of them end up in a machine like the sr2/srx?

about 200.

same goes with desktop cpus.

WE ARE less than 5% of intels target audience. THERE IS NO WAY THEY WILL BEND TO CATER TO LESS THAN 5% of the market.

the above mentioned w chip will be a single qpi workstation cpu that WILL NOT work in dual socket boards.

im not tryin to be an ass here... just want people to know that this may look cool but its not going to OC hardly at all.

when looking at this board people need to keep in mind how SB chips overclock... WITH MULTI.

so you take that fact and put it with the fact that xeons have locked multi's... when then you have a problem. NO OC.

another way to OC SB-E chips, which these xeons are in the SB-E family, is to use bclk straps. again... the xeons have locked bclk straps so that is another setback.
