Genius made some pretty good speakers for the SW series. But this is just ridiculous. Looks so cheap and ugly compared to wood imitation on the older models. Why not follow that?

If by 'decent' you mean a Xonar DX/D2X or Creative Titanium Pro then those will never sound as good or come anywhere close to sounding as good as the ONKYO HT-S3500's. Those Onkyo's alone probably completely blow my Z5500's out of the water in terms of sound quality.

it's hard to beat the value.

remote control, radio, headphone out, iPhone support, Burr-Brown DAC, Master DTS/TrueHD decoding, Amplifier, 4x HDMI 1.4a, legacy I/O, etc. it won't take up any space inside your computer and you can hook up a PS3, XBOX 360, PC, TV/Monitor.

Agreed, I have an essence ST hooked up to an old Denon receiver (can't remember exact model) and then Bowers and Wilkins CM5's in 5.1 with some random sub (the sub is ancient, can't remember its name). And like bumblebee said, you can hook up other devices without having to swap cables around everywhere.

On another note with powering speakers, i've seen speakers that require a power plug for EACH SPEAKER! (I think they were Definitive's).

as for the z906 logitech, i'd rather had the z-5500 anyway... the sub is smaller in the newer model (though the same power rating) 8in vs 10in i think and the control deck looks cheaper on the newer model as well. edit: actually the sub is weaker too, 165w vs 188w

Most likely PMPO. Not that Watts would matter anyways, as speakers can range from 80dB/W to over 90dB/W - a 10x difference in the output levels, so a 10W 90dB/W speaker can produce the same sound levels as a 100W 80dB/W one.
The Logitech's are both o.k. units for the money, but i still prefer my Yamaha receiver (much more versatile) and some good DIY speakers to the Z5500 or Z906.
