AOC, a worldwide leader in monitor display technology, announces a limited time special promotion on the portable 16-inch USB Monitor (e1649fwu), the ultimate laptop accessory. From March 16 through March 31, 2012, the monitor will be available for $99, which is $40 off the MSRP.

The 16-inch USB Monitor features a convenient built-in USB port that receives both power and signal via a single USB cable for plug-and-play connection. The AOC e1649fwu also combines productivity and portability into an elegant and lightweight display, providing an ideal take-along monitor for business presentations, and for other multi-screen applications like social media monitoring, photo editing, expanded spreadsheets and more. "This portable USB monitor is very simple to use and enhances productivity more than any other laptop accessory on the market," said Robert Velez, AOC Marketing Manager. "At a price of only $99, it is a must-have for both mobile professionals and home office users."

With the 16-inch USB Monitor, AOC continues its commitment to providing the latest in digital display technologies and innovative styling. The monitor offers impressive image quality with a 1366 x 786 resolution. Enabled by the DisplayLink DL-125 chip, the AOC 16-inch USB Monitor easily integrates with existing desktop / notebook environments and is supported on all leading operating systems including Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7 & Apple MAC OS X Tiger / Leopard and Lion. Linux support is also available through many of the standard distributions.

The USB Monitor features a handy built-in Smart Stand that pivots out when needed and stores flush against the back of the monitor when not in use. The foldable stand supports both portrait and landscape display. The e1649fwu has a clean and modern aesthetic that is complemented by a black piano-polish finish on the bezel, while a hard glass screen offers superior protection. One laptop can even support multiple USB Monitor connections to create a multi-monitor setup.

Every AOC monitor is manufactured to meet the most stringent green standards. Along with being mercury free, the packaging for the eco-friendly USB Monitor is made from recycled materials. Nice... tempting even! For it's simple and clean 1-cable operation. But since I wouldn't use it with a mobile device and have available ports on my video card, that $100 could buy a 20".

Safe to assume Win8 full compatibility? Sounds like a great secondary monitor, I don't have room for anything else larger next to the 24".

you must stay at some real cheap places when on vacation if they dont provide you with a HDMi capable TV.

I wonder how it plays with Linux. Most USB screens are not compatible...

Darn, I was extremely excited until I found out the response time was 16ms. I mean it's understandable but darn.

My NEC EA231WMi is a 16Ms panel, but I have never noticed it lagging or ghosting at all and the same monitor has gotten 4-5star reviews all over the interwebs.

imo judging a screen by how low the reaction time is so yesterday. screen reaction rates mean nothing so long as they use a decent panel.

SECONDLY the screen only connects via USB. They havent been clear if its USB 2.0 or 3.0, USB 2.0 would be unsuitable for HD gaming. so it doesnt matter what the screens reaction time is.

I like it as it shouldn't mess with your GPU power profiles. That being said, I haven't found one for $99 bucks yet. Also, great idea for using this with the Raspberry Pi!

Basis/facts for this?

Easy..... The total Bandwidth of USB 2.0

A full 1080P exceeds what USB 2.0's bandwidth is capable of which would make the video stutter and thats totally unplayable. for 720p though (and lets be honest - thats not 'full HD' gaming) you might be fine

USB 2.0 has been around since 2000, HDMI has been out since 2003 (according to wiki) If USB2.0 was really that good then they would have been rolling these USB-to-HDMI things out and getting them sold by the bucket loads.

HOWEVER the idea wasnt picked up until the appearence of USB3.0 and its because USB3.0 is 10x faster then USB2.0 and that extra bandwidth allows it to support full 1080p.

USB2.0 Bandwidth = 480Mbit/s
USB3.0 Bandwidth = 5,000Mbit/s
HDMI Bandwidth = 10.2 Gbit/s

It's USB 2.0 going by whatever pictures I could find. TigerDirect has them for 99 bucks now. If you don't want to go the USB route, there's a bunch of 18.5" monitors in retail for $89 bucks.

secondly....would you REALLY, and I mean REALLY really pack a 16" monitor and take it with you on holiday??

you are on holiday man, get the f**k outdoors, go sightseeing, hiking, adventuring or the usual shit people do when they go on holiday. Packing a 16" monitor for personal use would just be retarded. NOT THAT I CANT SEE THE BENEFITS IT MAY BRING. but why go on holiday if youre gonna spend it sitting in front of the screen???

Im more then happy to holiday with just a small netbook so long as it plays HD videos. being a netbook it will either be 10.1" or 11.6" but it is what it is and its plenty for blogging, youtube and HD video while on the move.

what I usually do when i go on holiday is make sure i have a good set of portable USB/bluetooth speakers to plug into my laptop for the movies and stuff after a day out sightseeing. I wouldnt be able to live with mediocre sound specially if im watching a movie.
My old trusty Altec Lansing XT1's might be old but they will more then shake the table if you crank them up so im plenty satisfied.

so suck it up!!! :slap::slap::slap:
